salmon alley June 16, 2006 June 16, 2006 I've got a fan in my canopy and I'm wondering if it cools more efficiently by blowing room air INTO the canopy or sucking the hot, humid air OUT of the canopy? BTW- ( I know that the fan will be more likely to corrode if I'm sucking humid air out...but I'm willing to sacrifice if it's more efficient at cooling)
emissary June 16, 2006 June 16, 2006 So I built 2 fans into my canopy at one point and decided I'd blow IN since I figured the ambient room temperature should be forced over the water. Well, problem is that once it starts to corrode, it blows rust into the tank. I don't turn those fans on anymore. I'd say mount them on the OUTSIDE of the canopy and blow OUT. ah well, lessons learned.
HowardofNOVA June 16, 2006 June 16, 2006 I think you answered your own question? Think of bathroom fans that remove the rising hot air out of the area, same principal! Room temperture will dictate your taqnk temperaturea being that it will just about equal over time unless you add a chiller or sump in a cooler area (basement for example) or cooler floor. My last tank canopy was made with a louvered closet door, which would have allowed less heat buildup inside canopy area. It was recessed below the top with the height being what it was you couldn,t see it.
rocko918 June 16, 2006 June 16, 2006 what about cooling the bulbs? doesn't that help with the heat issue? When my temp gets higher than 82 i put a fan in that blows across the bulbs to keep them cool. I have also heard/read that it extends the life of the bulbs. IMO i have found that blowing air across the blubs lowers my temp more. test it out, see which one drops the temp more and let us know!

Caribbean Jake June 16, 2006 June 16, 2006 SA Fans are only $7 at Target or Walmart, regardless of corrosion is preferred to suck air out and cool bulbs inside canopy. I have one inside canopy and it works great, the highest my tank has been is 84 on a very hot hot summer day.
DEEPBLUE June 16, 2006 June 16, 2006 You need 2 fans, one in on one side and on out on the other side. I use 4 fans in my canopy 2 in and 2 out and it works for me. Eric
