Saved a whale!

Hey, I though I'd share this story, it was an incredible experience. I was on the beach looking for a good wind with my traction kite, when I heard someone yell "Whale!" I ran to the scene and found three or four guys struggling with a Pilot whale in about three feet of water. It was quite an amazing site, the pilot is whale is small compared to most, this one was about 12-14 feet. I jumped in and scooped my hands under its massive head. I was expecting a heavy behemoth, but found the whale to be practically weightless in the water. The problem however, was the amount of surface area facing the on coming surf, one wave sent the whale rolling and the rest of us scrambling for our footing. When the whale rolled I saw that she was covered in scrapes and scratchs probably from rolling around against the bottom. There was alot of blood in the water, but I could not see any injury that serious. The whale seemed exhausted and weak, I had doubts that she was even going to make it. After the role we directed our efforts towards pointing her into the surf, soon after we did she swam away almost effortlessly. We watched her swim out a ways, and about 100 feet out she seemed to raise a flipper as to say good bye and then was gone. Later someone told me that a very small baby whale was found minutes earlier about fifty feet down shore and helped into deeper water. I am guessing the blood was after birth, and that the female either gave birth under the stress of being beached, or confused, and weak from labor ended up too close to shore. Either way I hope they find their way.I was hoping to encounter some sea life in the wild, a starfish, or a small invertibrate or two would have been fine but this was over the top!

Awesome story, anyone able to get any pics?

After the whale swam off on her own there was a loud estatic yell from behind me. There must have been at least fifty people on shore, I didn't check but I wouldn't be suprised to find out, that like my wife and myself they were to caught up in the moment grab a camera.

Awsome story. Not to sound too sappy but I would think that would be a spiritual experience. You'll never forget this one for sure.

Definetly, whales are amazing creatures, to meet one in the wild and to wrap my arms around it, is not something that happens everyday, and just as inspiring to me was the shout of joy from everyone there who seemed to yell out with one voice. This wasn't the false hoopla of a spectator sport, it was a group of fifty or so people, young and old from many different background, a group of strangers with probably all the political religious and social differences one could expect from such a random group and yet joined in one momment for the return of a gentle creature of the earth to it's life. If that shared respect for a creature that represents no finnacial gain, future or present ,to any of us, isn't a sign of something divine within us, then I don't know what could be. ... how's that for sappy!
