What Would You Do????

Hi,

I am working on setting up a 270g (72 x 36 x 24H) FOWLR tank and I am trying to figure out the water movement setup for this tank. I understand that the water movement on a fish-only tank is not as critical as a reef tank but I want enough flow to move around any detrius and fish waste up to the Calfo-style horizontal overflow trough.

So, what do you have or what would you do if you were me? Drill four holes for a closed loop with a 4-way OM system or purchase two 6200 Tunzes and a controller. I have not priced them but I believe they are close in price. Looking for the best way to move the water.

Thanks for your input.

Rebecca,

I can't say anything about the squirts (I don't have one), but I do have 2 streams and as water movement goes I really like them...

In particular I like the broad flow not narrow flow of the streams (plust the flexibility in porgramming).

I have been using Tunze streams since they came out.

They are great, however, in a calcium enriched environment, they need to be maintained to get full flow.

Well worth a soak and run in vinegar a couple times a year.

Get either the magnet holders, or make a custom bracket to mount well.

Don't know anyone using one now - but the OM's seem to need a lot of room and use a lot of PVC

4-ways rock

The plumbing can be a bit tricky, although i think it is just me

I suppose it all depends on how much work you want to under take, i'm glad i went with 4-way over streams, not only because of cost, they are well made, less cabling in/around tank, ruins the clean look of the tank and the after sales service is excellent as is before sales.

The 4-way is about $340 after shipping i think, sorry bad memory, and i may be wrong, and probably am (my PC connection at work is slower than dial up so got bored of searching) but my first try at a 6200 came up on Premium Aquatics at $451

Although everyone i know that has them says they kick arse, but for that price they should

For CL with a OM 4-way you are looking at $300+ and another $200+ for a good pump and 100+ for plumbing = $600ish

For 2 tunze's with controler you are at $700-800 with mags I think

My short experience haveing both on my new 215, I would go for tunze's. Less to fuss with and no worries of bulkheads leaking ... & get a much wider flow the way the tunze spreads out vs. concentration of a CL outlet noz.

HTH,

Both? I use both streams & a CL.

In truth, if I had it to do over I'd likely use the streams - just more energy efficient.

They are pretty big & ugly though.

I'm dealing with the same dilemma. :( But 20% OM group buy on RC made my mind. :)

I think you can not go wrong with any. The only thing I did not like about getting Tunze - I do not like how they look in tanks, fairly bulky. If you hide your OM all you see in the tank are nozzles.

dzekunoi,

I wish I would have seen the thread on the OM group buy last week. I sent them a PM in hopes that I might be able to get in on the group buy but have not heard back yet.

Anyway, currently I have the Tunze 6200's w/controller AND the 4-way OM on my new reef system. It is not completed yet so I have not seen either one in action. I figured since this tank will be a FOWLR the 4-way OM would work just fine. I don't need the full turbulence that the Tunze's can give off in a tank.

londonloco,

Thank you so much for sharing these links. I spent the last hour reading about these Vortex pumps. I am very interested. Another possible option.
