So I have a leather that is attached to a rock.  That rock is now in a place where the leather is unhappy.  I think he's getting too much light.  He never extends his polyps anymore and just looks SAD/pathetic really.

What do I do? Moving the rock isn't an option.  Do I cut him at the foot?

You can pretty much cut it wherever you want... And stick it somewhere that works,it will eventually reattach

The issue is that any tissue left will grow a new leather...

How long has it been like that? It might be shedding.

Pretty much since I set up the new tank. It had a few good days here and there but just hasn't been normal in like 2 months. I didn't worry about it for awhile thinking the same thing.

Can always cut it. If the left behind portion grows out it will either adapt to that area or bail out and you can move it wherever you like (or trade it).

If you do cut if off, you'll want to baste out the toxic residue that comes off the leather and/or do a bit of a water change. I had the same issue recently and the surrounding corals were incredibly unhappy for a few days because of the stuff the leather released when I cut him. Depending on where the leather is attached, you can also use bone cutters and cut or scrape the rock beneath the leather so that you don't cut the leather itself. It may not be possible, but worth looking into. Good luck!
