KenB February 21, 2015 February 21, 2015 Was wondering what folks thought about temperature controller swings. Mine has a 2 degree swing. Set at 78 comes on at 77 goes off at 79. There is another controller that has a +/- of one degree could set the low at 77.5 and high at 78.5. Just wondering if it's worth it to go from a 2 degree swing to one degree?
Crob5965 February 21, 2015 February 21, 2015 I had a magnetic Thermometer, that my daughter used to chase fish around the tank with until she lost the outside piece, I haven't even checked my temp since. I know some keep 2 heaters in their tanks rather than 1 larger one. I wouldn't worry about 2 Deg, a lot of people deal with bigger heat issues than that in the summer months without it hurting the tank.
madweazl February 21, 2015 February 21, 2015 2° isnt going to cause any problems. Fluctuations on the reef are considerably larger (though the inhabitants arent stuffed in a closed system).
Coral Hind February 21, 2015 February 21, 2015 KenB, What controller are you using now? Do you already have the other controller with the one degree deferential? My ACIII controller has a .1 deferential.
KenB February 21, 2015 Author February 21, 2015 I have a JBJ controller and my heater just went up so I got two new 300W heaters and was thinking about upgrading to aqua logic controller. The JBJ has been working fine for a couple of years now and doesn't sound like the 2 degree swing is an issue so maybe I'll stick with what I have. http://www.marinedepot.com/Aqua_Logic_Digital_Temperature_Controller_Single_Stage_Temperature_Controllers_for_Saltwater_Aquariums-Aqua_Logic-AL1711-FITETC-AL1711-vi.html
Crob5965 February 21, 2015 February 21, 2015 I think after switching to LED from 8 x T5 bulbs my tank temp is a little more stable, but like I said earlier it's not something I really check anymore, I had my return pump burn out a couple of months ago and went without my sump for about a 4 days which also meant I wasnt heating my tank and I had no issues.
