FrontosaTony May 5, 2014 May 5, 2014 I have 2x 250w MH with a spot for a third- not installed right now. My bulb needed to be changed and I was pricing mH and was think 60 for a bulb or 160 for an led fixture.... Hmmmmmmm. Thoughts? Recommendation? Also - saw this cool video. Still don't know which bulb I like but cool all the same. Check out this video on YouTube:
smallreef May 5, 2014 May 5, 2014 The only reason I went LED was heat...I love the look, don't get me wrong...but i prefer a large multi bulb t5 unit in comparison to Mh...so..really, beauty is in the eye of the beholder...I think you can get near the colors...but ..
JR-Tanked150 May 5, 2014 May 5, 2014 I like my t5, but wish I had a blend of t5 and led in one fixture.
Coral Hind May 5, 2014 May 5, 2014 Have you tried the Plusrite brand of bulbs? I used them for several years and liked them. Only $15 a bulb. http://www.1000bulbs.com/search/?filter%5Bcategory%5D=2103&filter%5Battribute_brand%5D=Plusrite#?filter%5Bcategory%5D=2103&filter%5Battribute_brand%5D=Plusrite&filter%5Battribute_color_temperature%5D=10000..0&sort=relevance&page=1&_suid=139928976205909879158313094367 Old threads about the Plusrite: http://wamas.org/forums/topic/35542-400w-se-mh-bulbs/?p=305716 http://wamas.org/forums/topic/35276-plusrite-metal-halide-bulbs/?do=findComment&comment=303570

Rob A May 5, 2014 May 5, 2014 I had a twin 250MH with twin 96w compact fluorescents but was concerned about the cost involved of replacing bulbs every year. I ordered 1 LED fixture to try it out and it gave off a lot more light than my MH/CF fixture, (which didn't have a very good reflector-so maybe a better reflector would have affected my decision). The LED gave off so much more light that I bought more as soon as I could and retired the MH/CF fixture. Plus the LED's usually have the ability to adjust the levels. Now some of them have controls where they slowly ramp up, simulate clouds and who knows what else!
FrontosaTony May 5, 2014 Author May 5, 2014 Awesome replies - Thanks WAMAS!!! So go to LED - and until then pulsrite MH bulbs are the cheaper way to go - Thanks! Ok next Question - I have 3 MH reflectors equally space across my 6ft tank. I only 2 have bulbs installed right now - I think the last guy took them out due to heat. I have no heat issues - in basement - and can put 3 bulbs in. What bulbs should I put in? My tank looks maroon and green and I would like more color. I know I have it in there ;O). I like the blue look in some tanks. How best to get that with 3 bulbs? Thanks again!
