We're pleased to announce that Keri O'Neil has agreed (on short notice) to fly up and join us to speak on her MACNA 2013 topic, "One Coral at a Time - The Journey of 200 Frags from an Aquarium Back to the Reef." _________________________ WAMAS Winter MEETING - Jan 25, 2014 (Saturday)The Winter Meeting of The Washington Area Marine Aquarist Society (WAMAS) will be on Saturday Jan. 25th, 2014, 1:00-5:00 p.m.Rockview Elementary School3901 Denfeld AvenueKensington, MarylandSpecial Guests and Highlights:- Speaker: Keri O'Neil - "One Coral at a Time: The Journey of 200 Frags from an Aquarium Back to the Reef."Abstract: Keri O’Neil’s interest in aquariums began during countless childhood trips to every public aquarium her parents could find. Naturally, she grew up wanting to work at one, so she earned her B.S. in Biology in 2001 from the University of Maryland, where she spent many hours counting zooplankton collected from coral reefs. She then began her professional career in 1999 as an intern at the National Aquarium in Baltimore, and worked her way up to Senior Aquarist, and continued her career there until 2008. Her favorite job responsibility was the care of the 6500 gallon Pacific Coral Reef display, but she is secretly also a big fan of Amazonian fishes. In 2009 she decided to return to pursue her MSc. in Marine Biology and Environmental Science at Nova Southeastern University’s Oceanographic Center, where she was employed by the National Coral Reef Institute, and was able to take part in what she considers her “dream research project”.Her research focused on aquarium cultivation of the threatened Atlantic staghorn coral, Acropora cervicornis, to produce fragments for reef restoration projects. She has spent the past four years working on a large study comparing the growth and survival of corals raised in land-based nurseries versus ocean-based nurseries, and carefully monitoring the health of aquarium-raised corals that were placed back onto a reef in Fort Lauderdale, FL. She hopes that her work will show the scientific community that corals can be safely and successfully raised in aquarium systems and that techniques learned in the ornamental aquarium industry and hobby can be used to enhance species survival. Her latest undertaking has steered her in a new direction, and she now works as a Marine Scientist with Coastal Eco-Group, Inc., an environmental consulting group that conducts biological monitoring of marine ecosystems throughout southeastern Florida.
