Orion November 21, 2013 November 21, 2013 I am going to be painting a stand that is going to be made primarily of birch plywood. Any recommendations/tips on what primer and paint to get? Exterior / Interior? Will be painting it black, and want it to be as water resistant as possible. Especially the inside.
smallreef November 21, 2013 November 21, 2013 Well...I prefer oil based paint..though I'm not sure if its still out there..you could always use marine paint, but that's really expensive... and as far as inside the stand, spray shellac and tub liner caulked down on the base...
s2nhle November 21, 2013 November 21, 2013 i am pretty sure you can find the oil base paint at home depot or lowes. You can also find the basement water sealer paint for inside the stand from there too.
matt November 21, 2013 November 21, 2013 kilz primer is oil-based...readily available. not sure that is or isn't the poison of choice for tank building connoiseurs...but I would think you could start there before picking a top coat
brad908 November 22, 2013 November 22, 2013 killz2 is definietly the way to go. a few coats of that, then your choice of paint.
jacobB89 December 17, 2013 December 17, 2013 did not want to start a whole new thread but seen this at lowes thinking about using it for inside the stand along with a caulk and a flat or semi glass for the outside. http://www.lowes.com/pd_219207-90-207006_1z0yye7+1z117hw+1z117m1+1z13ywj__?productId=3200859&Ns=p_product_qty_sales_dollar%7C1&pl=1¤tURL=%3FNs%3Dp_product_qty_sales_dollar%7C1%26page%3D1&facetInfo=Oil%7CWater%7CRust-Oleum
Orion December 17, 2013 Author December 17, 2013 In case anyone was curious I used Kilz oil based primer first, and then went with a high gloss interior/exterior Benjamin Moore black. http://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/for-painting-contractors/paint-products/impervex-latex-high-gloss-enamel#advs=0&tab=3 It's "weather resistant", and easy to clean up any spills that might occur around a fish tank. I also caulked all of the seems after priming, and used a white BMoore semi-gloss inside the stand which is also "weather resistant". I was worried the high gloss was going to be too glossy, but I sanded with 220 grit in-between each coat. It gave the final coat a very smooth finish and came out really nice!
