emissary December 6, 2005 December 6, 2005 So I was looking at my as-yet-not-quite-installed 180G glasscages tank the other day and noticed a small (dime-sized) chip in the glass. It's sort of a half circle, and the source of the chip is under silicone - such that if I fiddle with the chip of glass, part of it comes away easily but the flat part stays under silicone. What should I do? Does this hurt the strength of the tank? Tank underwent a leak test a while back and seemed fine. Can I make the chip less obvious?
Guest alex wlazlak December 6, 2005 December 6, 2005 im kinda wondering the same thing. ive got a small (tiny) chips on the front of my 120. the only thing i could imagine being effected with mine is coraline growing in it and not being able to remove it, but the chips half a cm round so its not too big of a deal. so with the chip in yours, is it towards the bottom where the black liner is? is the glass still in the hole?
davelin315 December 6, 2005 December 6, 2005 If it's in the seam, not that I'm an expert, but I'd worry about it. I'm not clear on your explanation of the location, but it sounds like it's a weakness in the bond between the glass. I personally would be worried about it with the possibility of the seam failing, so I think that if it is accessible, I might try and inject some silicone in there so that the chip itself is bonded to the place where it came from. If it's not in the seam itself, I don't know that I'd worry as long as it's not close enough to the seam to allow organisms to crawl in and start to displace the silicone along the seam itself. Now, on the other hand, if it's starting to spread at all then I wouldn't use the tank at all. If you look from the side and don't see any striations in the glass, I'd assume that it's OK. All of that said, I'm no expert, so take anything that I say here with a grain of salt. 180 gallons is a lot of water to have on the floor...

Jon Lazar December 6, 2005 December 6, 2005 You might call the manufacturer and talk to an engineer type. Jon
