Guest Keyoke October 29, 2005 October 29, 2005 Ok gang, I'm hoping someone can tell me if these guys are going to make it or not.. First, I've got a green digitata frag that's been in the tank about 2 months now. It's never really adapted, polyp extension is weak, color is green but it's kinda faded... here's a pic Next is a Green slimer.. it's totally blached and has been this way for months now, but there is still polyp extension - but _teeny_ polyp extension.. I can't get a good pic of this one for some reason, the camera I've got has no manual focus and the AF settings stink.. Actually got these two frags from Lee.. Now for contrast, I've got a Orange digi that seems to be doing well (tho like the two unknown Acros I've got.. the darn things seem to "plate" rather than branch..) Lighting is 4x 55W PC (2x 03, 2x 10K), so everything is placed high in the tank. For contrast, take a look at my maxima, which seems to be doing pretty good under the lighting, tho it's growth is a little slower'n I'd like.. Anyone have any ideas? I'd think that if the Digi and slimer wasn't getting enough light (they're actually higher in the tank than the clam...) the clam wouldn't be getting enough either.. but..
Jarosh October 30, 2005 October 30, 2005 That is the same results I had when I tried to grow digi under PC's. I was using 2 96w pcs and got really good growth for about 3 months. After that they started to brown and then slowly retracked thier polpys. I have since moved everything under the MH's in my 90 gal and the color has been slowly coming back, but the gorwth has sky rocketed.
steveoutlaw October 30, 2005 October 30, 2005 Jeff, Do you have a tank with halides? If not someone could probably hold them for you to see of the color comes back. But, it may just be life. I got a green slimer and a green digi from Lee and put in my tank. The green slimer bleached and never recovered.....but I had a lime green slimer that is thriving. Unfortunately sometimes it just happens. I could put them in my tank under the halides and see if they recover if you want. let me know. Good luck. Steve
Guest Keyoke October 30, 2005 October 30, 2005 Got a pic of the slimer finally... Wonder if those cinnimon polyps are causing some of the problem.. wish I knew how to kill 'em. they just keep comming back.. darn tank is overrun with them. -- anyone know what that bumpy purple mass is to the upper left of the frag? It grows and looks like it has polyps or something.. i thought it was some sort of weird coraline at first.. if it helps any, I got the original rock that thing is on from Michael G when he did his teardown way back when.. survived my initial tank cycle and grows _very_ slowly.. started out about the size of a quarter. -j
Guest alex wlazlak October 30, 2005 October 30, 2005 if you want to get rid of some of those zoos, im your man. id love to take em off your hands.
ReeferMan October 31, 2005 October 31, 2005 -- anyone know what that bumpy purple mass is to the upper left of the frag? -j 43797[/snapback] Look like a pavona! Check out live aquaria and see for yourself. I have one and it is def a neat coral.
dbartco October 31, 2005 October 31, 2005 I would guess some encrusting monti. Could be pavona, but I don't see any on the typical striations (kindof star shaped outward from the polyp), that seem to follow pavona. Any better pics?
davelin315 October 31, 2005 October 31, 2005 It's not a pavona from what I can tell. I had an encrusting coral like that before in my tank. The polyps resembled those of a hydnophora or even an acropora millepora, but they were much smaller and it had the appearance of being hairy or furry. I can't remember the name, but if you search for my posts on RC you should find some reference with some photos as well to compare it to. OK, I did the search myself and it looks to be a psammacora coral or an encrusting montipora or porites species. Looking again, probably more of a montipora as the psammacora has more of an angular shape to it than yours does.
Lee Stearns October 31, 2005 October 31, 2005 I agree not pavona- -probably encrusting Montipora- but even some acros can have large encrusting areas before they send up thier predominant branches. On the two corals green digi and Slimer- they are both alive- they obviously did not take the shock of the move well- but when they do catch up to the environment they should take off in growth.
