miggs76 January 22, 2013 January 22, 2013 What is the best way to remove sand from a tank? I don't want to get rid of all of it, just a half inch off the top. THanks
CaptainRon January 22, 2013 January 22, 2013 Siphon it out during water changes a section at a time. You probably would want to do it over several water changes so that you don't take out too much good stuff all at once. That'd be my suggestion.
miggs76 January 22, 2013 Author January 22, 2013 What's the best way to siphon it out? Is there a special siphon powerful enough to bring sand through it?
CaptainRon January 22, 2013 January 22, 2013 Yeah, what Eric said. I'd just use the same tube that I use for doing my water change. It's slow and low volume - but safer that way
miggs76 January 22, 2013 Author January 22, 2013 I just tried it with my regular siphon.....I was able to get about a cup of sand out during a 5 gallon water change. I'll repeat the process each day with a 5 gallon water change because I am sure I will be kicking up some nasty gunk when I siphon.
hypertech January 22, 2013 January 22, 2013 Just use tubing and you'll get a lot more out without stirring it up as much.
CaptainRon January 23, 2013 January 23, 2013 I think that's what my tubing is. It's the size that just fits over the nozzle of the maxijet powerheads.
