BaySailor January 15, 2013 Share January 15, 2013 i'm wondering if I can raise the height of my tank stand by placing 2x4's or 4x4's underneath of it before I refill the tank. Anyone ever try this or see any potential problems from doing it? Thanks
Coral Hind January 15, 2013 Share January 15, 2013 I've never done it but I done see why it would hurt as long as everything is secure and level.
smallreef January 15, 2013 Share January 15, 2013 You can...just make sure you are using straight lumber and not bowed, also make sure they are secured well with screws so as to not bow or twist...
mr.x-ray January 16, 2013 Share January 16, 2013 (edited) My stand is on an added 2x6 base. It's nice to have the tank up higher for viewing. Edited January 16, 2013 by mr.x-ray

flowerseller January 16, 2013 Share January 16, 2013 My stand is on an added 2x6 base. It's nice to have the tank up higher for viewing. I would have suggested it be done this way too as opposed to putting the wood on top of the stand. love the plant stand too. btw, those plants are scale magnets along the stems and mealy bug on the foliage. be watchful since you have no natural predators
extreme_tooth_decay January 16, 2013 Share January 16, 2013 I used 2x8s, attached on the inside with angle brackets and screws. You can see the progress in my build thread: http://wamas.org/forums/topic/27277-the-tooths-29g-oak-mantis-shrimp-build/page__hl__build Here is the final product:

My plant stand doubles as stepping stool for tank maintanance now. There was a nice stand and ceramic pot in its spot, but I knocked it over one night and it all broke. Ceramic and potting soil everywhere. This was the emergency repotting. And thanks for the heads up. Will have to take a look. BaySailor January 16, 2013 Author Share January 16, 2013 Thanks for the replies. One more question of those who build these: what type of wood did you use? Pine seems to soft to me.

Same pine I used to build stands. Plenty of strength. I'm not worried.
