jamal December 25, 2012 December 25, 2012 i have had a temp problem in my basement in the winter since i set it up. today i walked down there and the temp was 73.6. that is the lowest i have seen it. i know it should be higher and i have ordered 3 more jager heaters to that end but, i am more surprised that no one seems to be bothered by this.
Coral Hind December 25, 2012 December 25, 2012 That temp is fine for the fish but the corals probably couldn't stay there for long depending on what kind and where they came from. Growth will really slow at lower temps.
smallreef December 25, 2012 December 25, 2012 I had previously kept my FOWLR at 75....never had problems with fish....the anemone hated it though, lol I have an electric space heater in my basement that I turn on when its really cold out....

jaddc December 25, 2012 December 25, 2012 Aquatic animals can tolerate cool temperatures better then higher temps. Anything >70 degrees should be tolerated. Trouble comes in summer when the water can get really hot without A/C or a chiller.
jamal December 25, 2012 Author December 25, 2012 never have heat problems down there. even at 90 and up so thats good. one sps coral i just got didnt like it at all but other than that they are ok. although i think you guys are right about the corals. i see some slumping a bit.
OldReefer December 25, 2012 December 25, 2012 Do you have the sump sitting on a concrete or tile floor? It is easy to loose a lot of heat that way. It may be too late now, but a piece of styrofoam under the sump can really help. At least you will not have to worry about running a chiller this summer.
jamal December 26, 2012 Author December 26, 2012 thats true. i wish i thought about that when i was filling that thing with water. right now i have 3 x 300 watt heaters and the tank is right next to the furnace and it isnt enough. i bought a space heater down there as a stop gap while i wait for the new heaters. never thought heat would be the problem but i wont complain because i spent 80 dollars on more heat not 800 to cool it down.
Piper December 26, 2012 December 26, 2012 Woke up this morning and found my tank down 3 degrees from normal. One of my relatives left the garage door open all friggin' night with the sump right next to the open garage door. I'm surprised it wasn't worse. Scary. These things are space stations. Failure not an option.
smallreef December 26, 2012 December 26, 2012 Well, how bout next large water change you just empty the sump and put styro under?
