flooddc October 18, 2012 October 18, 2012 Well, With all the outages over this past summer and the weather man predicted that we are going to have a harsh winter, so I bite the bullet and ordered a Honda EU2000i Companion (heard a lot of good review about them). Unit just arrived this morning. I have never own a power generator before, so have no idea what to do with it. Read the whole manual, but doesn't really help. I understand that it must be maintained like a car (basic fuel, filter and oil change). Does anyone here own one of these Honda and being up keep? My first step is to prep it and run it for the first time to ensure it working properly as well as get it ready when the time come (hopefully, never have to use it!). Any advice is appreciated. Thanks
Der ABT October 18, 2012 October 18, 2012 use the better gas. use stabil marine or seafoam to help care for the ethanol regardless if your storing it or using it. Ethanol is VERY annoying. turn off the fuel supply and let it run dry every time that way there is no fuel sitting in the carb to gum it up when the ethanol breaks down (can do it in less than 30 days)... run it every so often to charge the starter battery or it will go bad. really shouldnt be much of any maintenance at all (had my 3500 for about 5-6 years no issues) otherwise enjoy the quietness...the 2000 will power a reef but will struggle with a fridge and otehr things at the same time just a warning...but it will let you know when it cant give enough power aka shut off or flip the switch if it has one.
Dan October 18, 2012 October 18, 2012 I never leave gas in my generator, only bad things can happen. drain it after every use, in addition to draining the tank read your instructions on how to drain the carb. you can use the gas that was left over in the generator in your car. keeping the carb drained is the biggest item. other standard maintenance is cleaning the air filter and oil changes per the hourly recommendations for your generator. If possible avoid gas with ethanol, not easy to do which is why its very important to drain the carb.

The companion "supposedly" capable of running a fridge. If it doesn't, I have backup (got my brother in-law to purchased one as well ). So I can run them in parallel.
