Origami October 2, 2012 Share October 2, 2012 Link to NBC News story Summary: 1. Coral coverage has been cut in half since 1985. Two thirds of that loss has come since 1996. 2. Loss attributed to a) storms [48% of losses], b) crown of thorns predation [42% of losses], and c) coral bleaching (10% of losses). 3. The increase in crown of thorns predation is linked to poor water quality which has allowed the species to thrive. 4. Coverage could decline to 10% or less in the next decade. Controlling the crown of thorns star may be the most effective, short-term solution.
