Bio: Matt Wandell

matt_main_keep.jpg

Matt Wandell has been a reef aquarium hobbyist since 1999 and worked as a biologist at the Steinhart Aquarium, California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco since 2007. During that time he has worked with a wide diversity of coral reef and fish systems from 2 gallons to 200,000 gallons. Matt earned his BS in Marine Biology from UC Davis in 2004. He has written articles for Advanced Aquarist, Coral, Reef Hobbyist, and Reefs Magazines. A lifelong geek and tinkerer, his passion is to figure out the best way to care for difficult fishes in a controlled environment.

In his talk, “’Expert Only’ Fishes: They’re not as tough as you think,” Matt will be discussing the nuts and bolts of how public aquariums like the Steinhart acquire and acclimate difficult fishes for display. From Ribbon Eels to Moorish Idols and Ghost Pipefish, Matt is going to share some reasons why it isn’t too terribly hard to keep these fishes with a bit of special care.
