STEVE September 20, 2012 September 20, 2012 Have been reading up on sterilzers...just want to get some comments / opinions from you guys. How do you feel about using a sterilzer, for those of you that do, pros and cons, and if you dont use one, like many why not. Is it worth the time/effort and expense?
GraffitiSpotCorals September 20, 2012 September 20, 2012 Do I need one? Not really. Is it worth the extra power used to run one? Not for me. Do I want to use one? Maybe I dunno... Do I wish I could afford the extra power used to run one? Yup.
onux20 September 20, 2012 September 20, 2012 40W user here. I like it. Have I seen visible differences from before and after...um maybe the water is a little clearer. I dont QT so it gives a warm fuzzy that I am killing some of the nasties although I cant prove it has. Benefits? To me there are...if only mental.
jimlin September 20, 2012 September 20, 2012 i have one hooked up to a 75 freshwater tank. it is hooked up to a timer and turns on for 2-3 hours a day. it is good for killing parasites that swim around the tank, but it can only kill what goes through the uv. i also have one for quarentine tank to prevent parasites from new fish to get into the display tank. i dont really use it on my saltwater display tank that often because it kills the pods in there as well. i say it is not required, but good to have around.
Integral9 September 20, 2012 September 20, 2012 I have a 18W I use on my quarantine tank and hopefully will pick up a 25W this weekend for my DT. For my QT, it definately cleared up the water and I attribute it to removing the bacteria and parasites in my QT, thus preventing reinfection after treatment. Before I added it, I was treating the fish and they were not getting better. After I added it, I could see noticeable improvements after each treatment. 18W is a bit of overkill though for the 30g tank, I admit. So I recommend it for a QT to prevent reinfection. For the DT though, maybe it will be good, maybe not. I intend to find out though. fwiw: the best looking / cleanest tanks I have seen all have UVs on them... also, I found this site to very informative, if not too informative: http://www.americanaquariumproducts.com/AquariumUVSterilization.html Just be aware they cover fresh and saltwater UV uses in there.

Sharkey18 September 20, 2012 September 20, 2012 Didn't use one for the first few years. Added one and I will NEVER not have UV. Fish stay so much healthier. I have one on my DT AND my QT.
