Djplus1 September 10, 2012 September 10, 2012 I just started with a 14g Coralife Biocube, that I'm technically using for a quarantine. I recently modded the lid for extra fans for cooling. Upon set up, I immediately chucked the bio balls, threw in a few small pieces of live rock in chamber 2 and left the plastic thingy on top, put a mag drive 1.9 to replace the stock pump and so far have left the stock filter pad in the first chamber. I also have about 10-15 lbs of LR in the display and a recently removed Koralia Nano, because of heat issues. 1. So, how does a media basket work exactly? Is it always the same setup? Or are there preferred ways? 2. Should I just throw out the filter pad too? If so, what should I put in that area? Anything? I want to make this tank as low maintenance as possible as I have a 72 gallon bowfront to concentrate on primarily.
BowieReefer84 September 12, 2012 September 12, 2012 Media baskets are great. I really like the company INTANK: http://shop.mediabaskets.com/BioCube-14-Media-Basket-BC14MR.htm They sell lots of nice stuff for AIO tanks, and have good service. Get rid of the stock filter pads which are too expensive and get a big bag of filter floss. You can just pull some off a couple times a week and put it on top level of the media basket. Here is the back of my old 29gal biocube: contest 2 by mteske1, on Flickr thread to tank build is here: http://www.wamas.org/forums/topic/39572-mikes-29gal-biocube/page__p__336408__fromsearch__1&?do=findComment&comment=336408

I want this to be as low maintenance as possible, as it is the quarantine tank with only a couple semi permanent residents (Chromis). I just bought some Rox .08 from BRS and also a bunch of filter floss. Here's what I'm thinking.. Chamber 1, hollow out stock filter pad, but keep plastic part so I can press filter floss in between it and the tank keeping the rest of the chamber empty for the heater. Chamber 2, Intank media basket with either filter floss or aquarium sponge on top shelf, Rox .08 on the second shelf and either leave the bottom empty or put some small pieces of live rock down there. Chamber 3, Avast ATO and return pump. What I would like to avoid is growing Chaeto, or spending any additional money on Chemi pure, Purigen or watever else anyone is using. My main concern is what positions should I place the stuff I have. If there is absolutely no way that this will work, what is the next cheapest addition to my set up (preferable something I can bag myself and buy in bulk), keeping in mind I will still be using the Rox.
