STEVE January 26, 2012 January 26, 2012 Should I be alarmed about the green colors I'm starting to see on some of my rocks? I have been told to put Astera snails in there and they will clean it up, I'm kinda freaking out...any comments. The tank is only 2 months old with Maxspect LEDS
firecrackerbob January 26, 2012 January 26, 2012 we will probably need a bit more info... are you using RODI, size of your tank, how often do you feed, water parameters... etc. algae is normal part of having a tank, but when there is an excess of nutirents things get out of whack- algea is the first sign of that... that said, a 2mo tank is still cycling. Not to be a member of the tank police, but personally I wouldnt have any fish in there before 3mo if you are starting with uncylced rock...
STEVE January 26, 2012 Author January 26, 2012 The rock was fully cycled in another system for 5 months. I do us RODI, I feed only in the evenings, very little RODS, maybe 1/2 piece. I do not "squirt"feed the tank at all. The lights are on for 10hrs....I figured if the rock was already cycled, I was ok to start stocking it with animals and corals...??
yagerboy January 26, 2012 January 26, 2012 (edited) You may want to consider cutting back your lights to 7-8 hours and see if that helps. Edited January 26, 2012 by yagerboy
RubberFrog January 26, 2012 January 26, 2012 Looks like normal 2 month old algae. It could go away with time... or it could get worse. lol Sounds like you're doing things right with the feeding. Are you keeping up on regular water changes? How are your nitrates and phosphates?
wvreef January 26, 2012 January 26, 2012 normal algae....looks good, i had some in my 180 and it went away and coraline came back in its place
Coral Hind January 26, 2012 January 26, 2012 I wouldn't worry about it. It will slowly be replaced by coralline algae. Adding the snails as was recommended would not hurt.
STEVE January 26, 2012 Author January 26, 2012 cOOl...Thanks for the input. I do about 25 gallon water changes every week to week n 1/2.
STEVE January 26, 2012 Author January 26, 2012 90 gallon tank, approx 25 gallon sump and 25 gallon fuge
OldReefer January 26, 2012 January 26, 2012 Sounds like you are taking good care of it. Relax and enjoy the ride. You will not believe all the crap that will happen over the next year. Sometimes it is best not to know. It is a great hobby.
Steve175 January 27, 2012 January 27, 2012 Agree: all is good but might cut lighting back to 8h/day and add a clean-up crew.
