Chris Ericksen October 1, 2011 October 1, 2011 Hi all, I have a leather which has been healthy for a good while. Over the last few days or so, it developed this white spot. (see picture) I don't see it healing as the spot has eaten through completely. Should I go ahead and cut away the affect area to save the rest? My other leathers are doing fine, so water quality seems to be OK. Thanks
Jan October 1, 2011 October 1, 2011 Leathers get pests too. Usually a type of nudibranch. If it is a nudibranch you'll see it at night. shine a flashlight in it at night and have a magnifying glass on hand to see if you can see them. Dipping the coral in resolve can. zygote2k October 1, 2011 October 1, 2011 Don't dip the coral! Leathers reproduce by pedal laceration. This involves a piece of coral forming a white spot which becomes a hole, then further forms into a piece ready to fall off and start a new colony.
Jan October 1, 2011 October 1, 2011 ...and they leave a white hole like this? I'd still look for pests at night, just in case. I lost a leather that was being eaten from the bottom up and it had it's flesh exposed like this. It started to wither way. I found the nudis on it at night. It was too far gone to be saved. Don't dip right away, even though it wont hurt it, but don't discount the possability either. Don't dip the coral! Leathers reproduce by pedal laceration. Chris Ericksen October 1, 2011 Author October 1, 2011 There are no other spots on the leather anywhere else. I hope that it is just splitting, however I'll take a look at it tonight and see if there's anything to see. Thanks for the tips!
