traveller7 September 19, 2003 September 19, 2003 Power was out in my area from 11:30pm to 6am. 3kVA UPS handled the large airpumps, internet routers, etc. for the time and was only down to 90% of capacity. Pretty happy I picked up that failed dot.com datacenter system Hope power is back for you folks sooner rather then later. Now, will that RO/DI and with UV really remove/kill that suspected bacteria
ReefMon September 19, 2003 Author September 19, 2003 Well I finally figured out the gas consumption of my generator is 10 gal per day...
ReefMon September 20, 2003 Author September 20, 2003 Hats off to Dominion Power! Our power was restored around 6:00 last night after they sent an army of tree clearing workers and equipment to clean up the carnage.
ridetheducati September 21, 2003 September 21, 2003 Power restored here. 230 am The smell from my basement is unreal. Battery airpump saved my nano, but not the main 180. It looks like a total lost. Water is 73 degrees and the SPS had not seen light since Wed 4pm. I am going to tear the tank down next weekend and start over. I see a few snails and conches moving around. I will move them to the nano. This really sucks. I lost a 32 inch TV also. The TV came back from the dead. :D
michaelg September 21, 2003 September 21, 2003 SHEET_ lost the tank and the big screen- that really does suck! If you pull any rock, bring it to the meeting so we can use it for mounting frags. I will have a lot of coral at the meeting- had to frag 2 colonies yesterday due to RTN. Seems the branches will be OK I think. You are welcome to frags when you are ready.
Guest cjm033 September 21, 2003 September 21, 2003 well 4 days and i just got power back i lost a ric that just split this week 1/2 of my yellow polyps and i think half of the half left over isnt even gonna make it a purple shroom red shroom with blue dots so almost everything in my tank is gone. plus 1 of my fw fish died . i couldnt find ne thing at the lfs' like battery air pumps none of my snails died but im pissed about my corals. thats just the tanks, ontop of that 3 or 4 trees fell through our roof 1 really bad the others not too bad (considering what the worst looks like) and my brothers, moms and dads cars had trees fall on em the worst thing to the cars is just a tree smashed my brothers hood. everything elese was a minor ding or dent and a few small holes in the bumpers. anyways to sum it up this pretty much sucks,Chris
geofloors September 22, 2003 September 22, 2003 Sorry to hear everyone's losses :( I lost power Thursday evening before midnight and got power back on Saturday morning. My generator pulled me through with no losses. George
Sph2sail September 23, 2003 September 23, 2003 Whew. I'm a lucky duck. Power dropped off for me Thursday, 9:30pm. Started the generator and got the reef and refrigeration running. Then some lights. Power returned Sunday, 1pm. Heck of a long outage here. Lesson learned: Salt attracts water. duh. Normally, house runs about 40-60% rel humidity. Electrical stuff is nice and dry. House eventually got to about 85-90% rel humidity. Tank outlets and powerstrips got damp. I think the key to this was the cooling fan under my tank blowing on the sump. It helped move evaporated water all over the place under the tank. I started having power bleeding from hot to neutral and you could hear the generator fighting to keep up with it. I had to power down a couple circuits to keep things running. Luckily it never got bad enough to trip the GFI, start a fire, short the world... :p Resolution: 1. Open the doors to my sump area to let humidity out and allow better air circulation. 2. I am going to somehow put all electrical stuff in a weather proof enclosures and/or move it out from under the tank. other issues I also had one capacitor fry for my 250W MH lamps. There's power, but it will not fire the lamp anymore. I suspect the power surges killed it off. Anyone got a spare capacitor? :D Otherwise, no loss of life or system issues! Yipee! I'm a very lucky dude... s
Guest tgallo September 24, 2003 September 24, 2003 all i can say is, what a pain in the you know what. my power went out thursday at 5 pm and finally came on tuesday . thank god for my generator or i would of lost everything. i also lost my internet connection so i wasen't able to see how everyone else was handeling this nitemare until tonite. from the posts i just read, im sorry that some of the other members tanks diden't make it. :( .
Gatortailale October 9, 2003 October 9, 2003 Generator website - sears 3600 watts for $499 - free deliver to local store and 0 interest for year on sears card. Just got the call that my generator is in. :] I got one via sph2sail prior to izzy, but sold it after storm hit to fellow reefers that lost power. Bring on the ice storms and power outages, I'm ready now. Bigdog
Sph2sail October 20, 2003 October 20, 2003 Reefmon, would you please post that website calculator that lets you figure out how much power various devices use? thx, s
ReefMon October 20, 2003 Author October 20, 2003 Here's the Reef Central Electric Cost Calculator HTH Glenn
Sph2sail October 20, 2003 October 20, 2003 Glenn, I was looking for the one that said how much power a particular piece of equipment used (e.g., MJ-1200 uses X watts, Little Giant pump uses X watts, etc.). s
Sph2sail October 21, 2003 October 21, 2003 Yup. As always, now I have a decision to make. I acquired a 4200 watt generator during the crisis. Worked well. Now I've figured the energy budget... Major Appl Volts Amps Watts Kitchen Fridge 115 11.60 1334 Mudroom Fridge 115 1.21 139 85W on label Furnace 115 10.20 1173 Septic pumps 115 12.00 1380 4026 Reef #Units Watts Watts Heater 1 250 250 Mag7 1 70 70 Mag12 1 110 110 PC Flourescent 2 96 192 MH 2 250 500 MJ 1200 4 20 80 Wavemaster 0 2MDQX 1 110 110 1312 Total 5338 Well, this says that just to run my basic home, w/out much buffer, runs 4000+ watts. Add the reef, some lighting, maybe a TV, and we blow the circuit loading. Yes, we can argue that most of this stuff does not run continuously and at full load. And not everything on the reef needs to be running. Hmmm... Anyone wanna swap a 4200 watt generator for a 5500+ watt generator? Still thinking about it.
ridetheducati October 22, 2003 October 22, 2003 I am getting a generator in the 6000w range ($700). Rumor has it, its going to be a bad winter this year. More snow than last year and 95 days of temps at or below 40. Western Maryland is supposed to get hammered.
Sph2sail October 22, 2003 October 22, 2003 6000W for $700 is a good price. Got a web link or description to what you are getting? s
Guest October 23, 2003 October 23, 2003 costco has a 4000 watt for $349 and 5500 watt for $499 generators
iceman October 23, 2003 October 23, 2003 One thing to consider with these generators are the noise that it produces. If you live in an area where your neighbors get agitated with noise, you better plan ahead. Either buy a quiet generator or offer to share an outlet with your neighbor. I borrowed SDBDRZ's while our power was out. It was 4,500KW unit with a honda engine and it was still loud! After about 14 hours of this thing running, I was getting annoyed myself. I'm going to get one of these: http://www.agturf.com/honda_eu2000i.htm Even though it costs more, the noise issue is worth it to me.
Sph2sail October 23, 2003 October 23, 2003 Ya gotta laugh at me on this one... Wife says "excuse me, but we've lived here for how long w/out power and been fine. yer bloody tank is all that we HAVE to have, so quit worrying this to death" She's right, I guess. Got to second the noise concern. Mine is an 8hp Honda engine and it was rather a bit quieter than my neighbor's 8 year old Coleman generator w/Briggs engine. Still, these guys ARE like running a big lawn mower all the time. As for the little quiet guys (2000W), only real challenge is 1Gal fuel tank. They are not intended to run 7x24 for a day or two, as are the bigger units. If you are OK w/shutting down your tank and then refueling, then restarting it, then I say go for it. s
ReefMon October 23, 2003 Author October 23, 2003 Since I hooked up 2 neighbors fridge's, took in 3 freezers full of food and let all the neighborhood kids watch DVD's, the neighbors no longer mind the generator noise In fact, the guy 2 doors down just bought one for himself.
