dshnarw June 10, 2011 June 10, 2011 Went to Kauai for vacation and thought I'd share some photos. Unfortunately, nothing underwater since my sister borrowed that setup for her vacation. I'll post some favorites from each set and the slideshow link for the rest... First up...The Plane(s). Mostly from in/around LA area. Windows could have stood some Windex, so I just did some retro film-look processing for the fun of it. The rainbow effect in the one photo is in-camera (birefringence). Plane Slideshow
dshnarw June 10, 2011 Author June 10, 2011 Waterfalls. Was quite rainy during the trip, so the waterfalls were generally outstanding...hard to get in the ocean with all the brown water alerts, but not a bad substitute staring at the waterfalls. Except for Secret Falls and the Na Aina Kai Botanical Gardens (names are shown in the slide show), they were taken with 30-second exposures to get the silky water feel and to effectively remove the annoying people that swim/walk through the middle of the photo. Waterfalls Slideshow
dshnarw June 10, 2011 Author June 10, 2011 Sunrises/sunsets...We were kinda lazy on this trip, and combined with having misplaced the one really setup effort I made for sunset photos, I only got a few. A combo of "normal" exposures and some long exposures that produce a still-water effect at the expense of blurring the clouds/foregrounds. Sunrise/set Slideshow
dshnarw June 10, 2011 Author June 10, 2011 (edited) Last set... Plants/flowers. Always my favorite set. Decided to try some more unique approaches to these, so some panoramic crops and such mixed in with the more traditional stuff... Flowers/Plants Slideshow Edited June 10, 2011 by dshnarw
roni June 10, 2011 June 10, 2011 Wow, you're obviously a gifted photographer! I never get pics that nice.
jason the filter freak June 10, 2011 June 10, 2011 You make an awesome geologist astonishing photographer
sportzfish June 10, 2011 June 10, 2011 Are the Botanical Gardens the one where you have to ride a riverboat to get to it? I think I visited that the one time I was there. Also did you ever check out this tide pool called the Queen's Bath? When I visited they had some wrasses trapped in the pool and I managed to catch one with my hand to remove a hook that was lodged in its mouth. I am surprised there were no pics of chickens or feral cats, they are everywhere on that island (along with the occasional burnouts). It certainly is a beautiful place, I wish I could say that I am going back soon!
dshnarw June 10, 2011 Author June 10, 2011 Wow, you're obviously a gifted photographer! I never get pics that nice. Thanks! I contend that it just takes practice and a little bit of craziness but, if Doug pops in, he'll probably disagree. You make an awesome geologist astonishing photographer I'll tell ya, photography is a lot more fun than lab work, too! It certainly is a beautiful place, I wish I could say that I am going back soon! The one you're thinking about is probably Smith's. They have a botanical gardens, riverboat trip to Fern Grotto, and luaus. We went there 2 years ago for the luau, but they let you go through the gardens as well. The pics from the botanical gardens this time are from either the National Tropical Botanical Gardens (Allerton) or Na Aina Kai. They're much more extensive than Smith's - Allerton is known for its movie appearances (most of Pirates of the Caribbean 4 was filmed there, the trees I posted in the plants set were the ones from Jurassic Park, etc.) and Na Aina Kai was made by the ex-wife of Charles Schulz. If you make it back and enjoy gardening, both are well worth the relatively expensive tours. The last 3 waterfalls I posted above are the ones on the hike to Queen's Bath. We've been to Queen's Bath a lot, and how good it is varies quite a bit - sometimes pretty stagnant, sometimes very good. The surf was a bit too rough for it this year, but there's another spot hiking 10 minutes west from Secret Beach that has good tide pools during rougher weather and a far less visited and more spectacular set of waterfalls. A lot of people start the hike and turn around at a choke point where the only safe way to cross is boulder-hopping near the cliffs, and even fewer find the way up the cliff wall to get to the waterfall. We saw probably 50-60 people on the way there and back, but only 2 families actually made it to the tide pool with us and we were the only people at the waterfall (shots 4 and 5 of the waterfall set). I think we've been to Kauai so many times that we just ignore the chickens (other than cringing when we see people feeding them). I've taken so many photos of them on past trips that I rarely think of them as subject matter anymore. The cat population doesn't seem too bad anymore...or they've just shied away from people more lately. We only saw a few scamper across the road while driving on this trip. I hope you make it back! I'm already attempting to plan the next trip
sportzfish June 10, 2011 June 10, 2011 Wow, you really know that place! All of what you said kind of jarred my memory. Where do you stay when you go there---sunny southside or princeville.

Where do you stay when you go there---sunny southside or princeville. lol - This was our 4th trip, 3rd in 3 years. It's become our home away from home. We actually stay in Kapa'a in cottages/rental homes. We like the local feel of Kapa'a and the central location is nice for driving to everything. As long as you avoid going south from Kapa'a in the afternoon, it's a great spot.
OUsnakebyte June 17, 2011 June 17, 2011 Sweet orb weaver! Now, it's time to finally invest in the underwater housing(s) and strobes for that rig and get to snapping at depth! I don't want to hear any whining about how much it costs - sell some photos... Cheers Mike
