hypertech April 16, 2011 April 16, 2011 It could. Those thing are good at accumulating waste and can be more trouble than their worth. To me, it's one more thing that needs cleaning and you don't need it. I dont like cleaning. But then, i have a low maintenance philosophy.
hypertech April 16, 2011 April 16, 2011 (edited) Also, if you don't have a controller, you may want to think about something like a RKL before you decide your tank is done. Good point in the post above about temp. I nearly lost everything in my biocube when the heater flaked and the tank got to 93. Temp control of some kind is a good thing to have IMHO. Reefoholic April 16, 2011 Author April 16, 2011 (edited) Bad decision to go with the Remora? I understand what your saying there with the Aquapod 12g. I had an 8 gal biocube and 14 gal biocube both with internal HOB filters prior to this tank and everything was growing so fast that they literally out-grew the both tanks. That's why I have upgraded to a new setup with the external canister filter. The tank has the same fish I had for almost 2 years now: 1 clownfish, 1 yellow tang + 6 hermit crabs, 1 peppermint shrimp, 2 snails and 1 emerald crab. should I add more cleaning crew to take care of the algae and/or other nuisance??? What do you think of RKL Basic? It monitors Ph, salinity, temp and also comes with a wavemaker too apparently. I won't need the wavemaker since I bought the Vortech MP10 but I can def use its other features! correction - just realized one needs to purchase probes separately, like Ph... FWIW, if you were to use an Aquapod 12g tank for example, they only have an internal version of a HOB filter and no protein skimmer. These systems work great right outta the box and you can grow all types of corals as long as you know what you're doing. It's doubtful that the Remora skimmer will perform as expected, but so long as you do regular water changes, and don't have a high water temp issue, you'll be fine with what you have. You only want to put 2 or 3 fish total in 20g, maybe a pair of cleaner shrimps too. Throw in a few hermits and snails and you're good to go. Don't overfeed and stop dosing zooplankton or any other "supplementals" and your tank will thank you with low N03. Edited April 16, 2011 by Reefoholic
hypertech April 16, 2011 April 16, 2011 That will work great for your tank. It will do your heater and lighting schedule and shut off the lights if it gets too hot. It comes with a four outlet strip. I don't believe it does ph or salinity out of the box without add in modules.
trockafella April 16, 2011 April 16, 2011 My reason for the sump is to give you 1.) a place to keep all of your eqiupment, so your display is for looking at livestock not equipment 2.) A place for a refugium, which will beneficial to your tank. If you dont wanna go with a sump, I would go with the HOB refugium with the built in skimmer, then you have the best of both worlds, and I think it would look better and be more useful to you..
trockafella April 16, 2011 April 16, 2011 Dude, you have 2 threads going with the same questions going on..
