L8 2 RISE March 7, 2011 Share March 7, 2011 (edited) 82 isn't that hot. My last tank ran between 80 and 83 regularly so 82 is not hot enough to kill your fish unless the change was very rapid. What temp is it normally? I think the thermometer is messed up if it's that hot when you touch the glass. BTW, did you find an RBTA? Guest thefishman65 March 7, 2011 Share March 7, 2011 Set heater at 78 and I double checked it. A while later (really don't know how long) it started shutting off at 82. Heater stop working as intended.

hypertech March 7, 2011 Share March 7, 2011 No heater is really reliable. That's why most people have or eventually end up with a controller. Set the controller at 78 and the heater at 80, for example, for redundancy and extra reliability. It sounds like the thermostat failed or was set wrong on the heater. I recommend getting a RKL or some other controller as soon as you are able to prevent this sort of accident from reoccuring. It happened to me when I started too. I never got to buying the controller till I had a tank at 90 degreed all of the sudden one day. I would never run a tank withut a controller now. flowerseller March 7, 2011 Share March 7, 2011 what do you use to determine temp and is that accurate? 82 will not kill a clown fish, naked or clothed, look for other reason.
L8 2 RISE March 7, 2011 Share March 7, 2011 +1. Also, 73 is pretty low to be running a tank at. I just asked because I was in fins and feathers today and they have several rbta's, I was going to pm you but saw this and obviously right now isnt the best time. treesprite March 7, 2011 Share March 7, 2011 I've had heat spikes up to 90f for an entire day with no fish deaths, and only about 25% coral loss (not much considering the temperature - I expected more).
GraffitiSpotCorals March 7, 2011 Share March 7, 2011 Yea my tank went to 82 yesterday, fish are fine. Might check your levels to make sure?
