kingfish November 18, 2010 November 18, 2010 I have a 90 gallon set up with 48 inch 4x130 Watt Current USA PowerCompact Extreme Orbit Fixture (discontinued). I'm thinking the lights may be a hard sell. So my question is. Does anyone know if i can use the ballast in the current set up to run some 48 in HO-T5 or VHO. Im upgrading to a 210 set up and I won't be using Power compact lighting. I don't want to trash the lights so I'm thinking I can salvage the ballast and probably change out the end caps for some HO T5s or something. Let me know what you all think.
Coral Hind November 18, 2010 November 18, 2010 It depends on the ballasts. Normally they are magnetic ballasts in those fixtures that do no light other lamps properly. If it is an electronic ballast then might do what you want. If you can get me the info off of the ballasts I might be able to help more.
Kevin Garrison November 18, 2010 November 18, 2010 If you change the ballasts to properly power the T5 HOs then yes, you can easily re-use the fixture by converting it. I agree with Dave that the PC ballasts, if they power them, will not be sufficient to push the T5 bulbs properly and give the light you are looking for. Dave however is the by far the expert on ballasts, so I would definitely go with his suggestions.
