Jan September 23, 2010 September 23, 2010 Does anyone know where I can purchase Paragon II? My seahorse appears to have an early stage of snout rot. Since i'm unsure if it is fungal or bacterial I'd like to treat for both. Paragon II in conjuction with Furanace with Neomycin, are the recommended treatment. Thanks J
Chad September 23, 2010 September 23, 2010 If I remember correctly, Paragod II is a trade name for a aquatronics product... last I looked into it, aquatronics restrctured their business and no longer offer products to the general public. I have a pretty decent SH medicine cabinet on hand and will look at my sources when I get home to see if there is a reasonable substitution. Although, isnt Paragon II primarily an antiparasitic and secondarily an antibacterial? Without my reference material available at the moment, my memory might not be working well. My off the cuff answer would be to treat with neomycin/nifurpirinol as you plan, since the combo treats both fungal and bacterial infections and works quite well for seahorses (any time I am not sure what the specific problem is, but it could be either, I treat with the combo). I am sure that you know, but neomycin will destroy your biological filter, so a HT is the only way to go for the treatment.
Chad September 23, 2010 September 23, 2010 Jan, I searched some and the Paragon II active ingredients are Metronidazole, Furazolidone, Neomycin Sulfate, Naladixic Acid and Sodium Chloride. The top two ingredients are both intended treat parasites. I would treat with just the neomycin/nifurpirinol since it is usually quite effective. Seahorses are usually very resilient to medications, so if you catch it early the prognosis is usually good. What is your Paragon II source? Let me know how it goes.
Jan September 23, 2010 Author September 23, 2010 On further research I've discovered that Aquatronics is no longer in business so no Paragon II to be found anywhere. Paragon II is used for several things it's good for bacterial as well as fungal disorders. It probably does have some antiparaitic meds in it too. I wouldn't treat the entire tank. It would kill off everything else. I have a 5 gallon QT that's set up for them with heater, light and HOB filter. I need to get a fake post f come sort so they can hitch. From 2003-2009. the one I found to be the most informaive was by Pete Giwojna. He appears to be a seahorse guru. I also posted a query on seahorse.com asking what they suggest as an effective treatment for snout rot. I'm not so sure they're snouts are rotted yet, but they are swollen. It wont hurt to treat. I'll keep you posted. Thanks, chad. Hey are you around this weekend? I have to take my daughter to Childrens Hospital in Boston for an evaluation tomorrow and then I'm in New York for the weekend. Jeff will be here alone to care for these critters. If need be could you stop by? LMK. Chad September 23, 2010 September 23, 2010 I sent you an email regarding all this medication and stuff. Elsa has a busy weekend planned for us, but I will be in the area and will be more than willing to help if something comes up. Looking at my SH medicine cabinet, it seems most everything is expired... not sure if that is good or bad? I guess I will have to restock before I get another group in the next little bit. Tell Jeff not to hesitate to call if he needs. Hope all goes well in Boston.
Chad September 23, 2010 September 23, 2010 Pete Giwojna, btw, is a very good source of information. He also responds quickly (and eeexxxtttrrreeemmmlllyyy thoroughly) to queries and questions, much of my current seahorse husbandry reference material is from him. But temper his recommendations for specific sources and products with the fact that he is a salesman of a specific (and pricey) product line.
