Donmarco January 1, 2010 Share January 1, 2010 There's something growing in my 120G reef tank and I can't identify it. It looks like some type of algae, but it's very slow growing and is localized to one area. I think it's some type of algae, but it's not like any I've seen. None of the cleanup crew touches it. It's not something that concerns me right now, but I'd just like to know what it is, just in case I need to deal with it. Mark
zygote2k January 1, 2010 Share January 1, 2010 It's a brown macro algae- the name escapes me. It grows in the A12 and poses no threats that I know of except for looking unusual.
luceneck January 1, 2010 Share January 1, 2010 (edited) Could it be brown plate coralline algae? Or is it pliable making it a plant type algae? http://www.aquariumarts.com/brownplatecoralline.html Edited January 1, 2010 by luceneck
Donmarco January 1, 2010 Author Share January 1, 2010 (edited) Could it be brown plate coralline algae? Or is it pliable making it a plant type algae? Actually it's stiff but not hard. It doesn't sway in the current but remains rigid. It's actually attractive. Here's another photo showing the growth in context. It does resemble coraline algae in the way that it's layered.
