txaggies07 November 20, 2009 November 20, 2009 I have a 215g that I need powerheads for. I currently have a Koralia 3 and a MJ1200 w/ the mod to make it 1600gph from my 120g. I am not looking to spend too much money. Is 20x still the standard? If so, that is 4300gph. I have 1600 (MJ1200)+850(K3)+500(return pump) = 2950. Would just getting another MJ1200 w/ mod work...but leave out the Koralia 3. This would give me about 3700 gph of flow.
steveoutlaw November 20, 2009 November 20, 2009 I don't think there is a rule. It all depends on what you're keeping. Get another MJmod and see how it does. I'd wait to see if there is too much flow before removing the Koralia.

But, for the most part, the amount of flow +/- is dictated by the inhabitants of the tank.
epleeds November 20, 2009 November 20, 2009 i saw on your build thread that your using a hob overflow. have you filled it up with water yet? have you thought of drilling the tank. I have a hob on my 75 right now and would have loved to drill it before i set it up. just a thought. then you can have more turn over thru your sump.
txaggies07 November 20, 2009 Author November 20, 2009 I have already filled it partially with water. The bottom glass is tempered. I have a smaller version of the overflow on my 65g and have been happy with it. The eshopps ones work very well. I had a RR 120g, but I didn't like how much space in the display I lost.
Grav November 22, 2009 November 22, 2009 Dude!!!! Aaron! How are you man? We miss you. I miss you!! Come back! If you want lots of flow cheap, go with the MJ1200 + mod. New propeller does 2400 gph. I really like the vortechs but big $$$. 10x to 20x is pretty good. Of course it depends on what you want to keep.
txaggies07 November 23, 2009 Author November 23, 2009 I decided to do 4xMJ1200 w/ mod. There is no way I can afford vortechs. My wife would shoot me. I miss the fish tank stuff. WAMAS is much more active the MARSH out in Houston. I also can't believe that I got a 215g. I sold my 120g and got out all the money I put into it. I bought a 215g that was a pretty good deal. It isnt RR, but I decided I would rather do the eshopps overflow than lose the space in the tank. My tangs love the new space.
txaggies07 November 23, 2009 Author November 23, 2009 I didn't realize the MJ1200 mod came with 2 propellers. It looks like I will have ~8400 gph instead of the ~6400 gph I though I would.
sdah0414 November 23, 2009 November 23, 2009 I'm interested to see how your pumps are working with the upgrade mod. I tried two different 1200s and they both rattled so much I had to take them out. It wasn't really that bad but the vibration was definitely noticable. Do you notice any noise with yours?
txaggies07 November 24, 2009 Author November 24, 2009 I already have a 1 MJ 1200 w mod that I was using on my 120g. It works great. Make sure the impeller sits in the little hole in the encasing.
lhcorals November 24, 2009 November 24, 2009 Just watch the MJ's, the one i had constantly wanted to run backwards. I had a couple of fish that would bed down near it. Sad to say it reversed during the night and the fish were no more.
steveoutlaw November 24, 2009 November 24, 2009 Well, if you still have time to drill, the glassholes overflows are great and don't take up much space at all......plus you still get the good surface skimming.
