El Camaron October 26, 2009 October 26, 2009 i am looking to upgrade soon and will not be needing any more rock, maybe a few LBS but not much and would not get those pounds for a few weeks maybe a few months, anyways how would be a reasonable amount to wait before a transfer can be done, only thing new will be the most of the sand. thanks
ReeferMan October 26, 2009 October 26, 2009 When I switched tanks I put all new water and sand in with established rock and waited 4 weeks and the tank never cycled. I have seen people switch everything at once but its a hit or miss. I would wait 3 -4 weeks if i did it again
Coral Hind October 26, 2009 October 26, 2009 As long as the rock is fully cured and the water is aged I have never had any issues moving it all over at once. I would keep maybe 50% of your old water to put into the new system so it is not a major shock.

The more established items (rock, sand, water, etc) you use = considerably less downtime. . Btw, Renato, congratz on the upcoming tank upgrade. Going to that 180, I see
El Camaron October 26, 2009 Author October 26, 2009 thanks guys, i will keep all this in mynd for the transfer. Dan, i dont know about that big lol, its the 70 gallon cube.
zoozilla October 26, 2009 October 26, 2009 Dan, i dont know about that big lol, its the 70 gallon cube. LOL A 70 cube; Sounds sweet and definitely more leg room than the 34. Is this going to be custom built?
El Camaron October 26, 2009 Author October 26, 2009 I was thinking custom at the begining but now i may just get the Marineland 30x30x18 and put two T5 24 lights with two power brites in between. Definitely way more room, especially since i am not getting anymore rock. Once the tank is running witha 40pound bag or sand, can i slowly take cup fulls of sand from my tank and place in the other tank to kelp fill up and seed?
amos October 26, 2009 October 26, 2009 Just want to echo the above thoughts. I've done three tank transfers/upgrades all in a day. I upgraded my 29 to a 55, the same 55 to a 90, and a friend's 55 to a 90. In two of the cases, we used new sand. Minimal new rock was introduced during the swaps. We used as much existing water as we could. Never lost anything in the swaps. I even had a blenny hitch hike into the new tank with a rock I was putting while the temperature was still in the low 70s... and he survived! Jon
reefhunter October 26, 2009 October 26, 2009 I downgraded from a 220 to a 120 and had no issues with LPS/Zoas and fish... I sold off the SPS however before the move...
El Camaron October 26, 2009 Author October 26, 2009 cool, i dont know about selling my SPS though. I am asuming they may loose a bit of their color if they get stressed but i will try to minimize that.

So when you thinking of getting it?
El Camaron October 26, 2009 Author October 26, 2009 comes in on thursday, i will probably be stopping by lowes tonight to pic up some wood for the stand, and will have a plumbing friend of mine come plumb it since i have never done a good plumbing job for a tank before.
