Anyone know where i can get some Formalin, it was recommended to use this to treat.

BTW - I have had the top 3-4 diseases in the display and QT by now with all the different fish I have had.

I know there is some differing thoughts on this - read misinformation passed along via forums - but unless the disease is without a host for ~8 weeks, it will be present in the tank and can infect any new fish.

There is some good information out there to support this. Seeing as how ich/brook/oodnium are parasites, it is hardly plausible they are present in everyone's aquarium, even when there is no host, and then only show up when they want. Its more likely that the new snails that were added (or anything - just using snails as an example) carried the parasite with them. Hence they aren't just something that is carried in via infected fish.

I just thought I would throw that out there since you will probably want to restock at some point.

I'm not a scientist, biologist, or expert - but it just makes sense to me.

I know Roozens has it. If you treat with it be careful and DEFINITELY airate the water. It sucks the 02 out quick.

I don't have any personal experience with killing fish like that though.

I would also start at a very low dosage since they are pretty sick by now.

if they do in fact just lay dormant after 8 weeks or so, how do i know for sure i can restock? unless i redo the entire tank. my snails and shrimps are having a feast on the dead fish tho =(

Here is how I did it - and haven't had any issues since. I don't know 100% that it worked, but it is a relief to know I haven't had a sick fish yet. I got tired of dealing with tank issues that I felt were preventable and QT everything - this includes inverts.

All of my fish went into 4 QT tanks. I left the display empty for ~8 weeks. Of course a couple of QT tanks got sick, so I lowered the salinity in them overnight, then left that way for a few days. Slowly I raised the salinity back up.

Then I kept a watchful eye on all the tanks. I only had to dose 1 with a mild solution of formulin. I think I added 1ml for 20g or a little less than that.

Everything stayed in QT for a full 2 months after the last sign of any issues.

It was a complete pain in the arse, and no fun. Especially since the display was empty.

It was more than worth it since I haven't lost a fish since then. Prior to that it was like russian roulette. I had probably lost upwards of $3k in fish prior to that - ~$1500 was due to a pump that quit when I dosed formulin and didn't realize how much 02 it pulls out

thanks, i think i will set up something similiar. but what do i do with the inverts in the DT now? there is no possible way i can get them all out without breaking the entire tank down. especially those cleaner shrimps.

Just leave the shrimp in there. I only QT new ones since they can carry parasites on them. Since there will be no host in the tank it won't matter.

I don't know about the dormant issue. Maybe someone else can comment on that.
