Guest ssaldana April 24, 2003 April 24, 2003 Im debating on how to setup the MH lamps in my prefrab hood. If lights are mounted inside this hood, there will be about 3" b/w the acrylic hood and the bulbs. For those of you that own or have owned clarity plus aquariums, you might be able to visualize how the tank is made. There are only two slots on the top of the tank, though the aquarium is basically all one piece, with the exception of the back. Im worried that the short distance b/w the acrylic and the lamps might cause damage to the tank. Any advice would be great.
Guest snapper April 24, 2003 April 24, 2003 Steve, What wattage? Some people have had center braces melt under halides that were mounted too close to the tank top. One trick you can do is elevate the hood 3-4" with a wood frame or put it up on little pillars. That way you create an air gap to dissipate heat. Sanjay's lecture inferred that 6-9" above the water surface gave the best spread to intensity for MHs. Snapper
Larry Grenier April 24, 2003 April 24, 2003 Personally, I wouldn't mount any halide over 100w only 3" from the top of an acrylic tank. Like buckweat... I mean snapper said, I've seen some nice canopy mods where they took an existing canopy and made a kind of a skirt for it which elevated it several inches.
dgasmd April 24, 2003 April 24, 2003 I have 400 watt halides about 2 inch from the brace edge. I was very worried about it for the same reasons given above. My solution to it was to place 2 small fans, one blowing to the bulb and another blowing to the brace. That has worked great for me for now, but I don't know the long term effects of the bulb being so close. The brace is very cool to the touch now. Eventually, I will elevate it some. Alberto
Guest ssaldana April 24, 2003 April 24, 2003 I guess elevating it is the only solution. Alberto, I would like to point fans at the bulb but I just dont want to worry about it all day :D eric, these are the 175w's we traded.
Guest ssaldana April 25, 2003 April 25, 2003 Anyone know the type of material is used in the MH hoods manufactures use to enclose the hood. Is it ordinary acrylic?
pez April 25, 2003 April 25, 2003 Most commercal hoods are made of wood, aluminum, or acrylic. I've never seen a MH made of acrylic though. -T
Guest ssaldana April 25, 2003 April 25, 2003 Im referring to the bottom cover. The glass shield that protects splashes and sometimes UV.
