psbuckland April 3, 2009 April 3, 2009 Hello All.... Newbie here. I am looking to setup a tank this summer. I would like some thoughts on getting a reef ready tank with overflow, or drilling a tank? Also I live in Frederick and was wanting to see some nice setups in either pics or in person to get some setup ideas. Any help would be appreciated! PSB

PSB If you're looking at getting setup, you should definitely join the club. That will open up the For Sale area where members sell stuff as they're upgrading or getting out of the hobby. You can usually find excellent deals on tanks and equipment in there. Your first purchase from a club member or participation in a group buy will usually pay for the membership. Not to mention the deals on coral frags and livestock. I am definitely a proponent of getting a tank that is already reef-ready. However, drilling is a very easy process and you can usually find non-reef ready tanks cheaper. If you're willing to do a little DIY, it can be much more economical. As far as looking at setups, look through the dedicated tank thread forum and you'll find tons of pictures both of the tanks and the equipment and descriptions of the thought process that went into some of them. If you're in DC, you're more than welcome to stop by and take a look at my tanks, but there are several people up your way or in the western part of NOVA (Louden Co area) that will be closer.
ctenophore April 3, 2009 April 3, 2009 Welcome to WAMAS! What size are you considering? re: reef-ready vs. drilling, drilling is easy but that depends on your DIY skills or willingness to drive or find someone local to help you.
psbuckland April 3, 2009 Author April 3, 2009 OH, and WELCOME! Thanks for the quick replies! I joined the club last week...just waiting to get access to the members only forum area. I have sent an email to the form admin, but no response. Anyone you can contact? Anyway...I wouldn't have any problems with DIY stuff, it may depend on if really good deals are around at the time I buy. I was considering 55-90 gal. I feel in love with the Oceanic bowfronts...they are just stunning! Thanks again for the help! Shane

Jon Lazar April 3, 2009 April 3, 2009 55s can be more challenging to aquascape because of the 12" depth from front to back...go with the 90 (or bigger!). You can thank me later. Welcome to the club, too. Jon

Welcome to the club, too. Jon All the response is really great! I have read bigger is better! I would love to go 70-90 gal. Anything bigger might require approval from the spousal unit I look forward to learning so much from all the great knowledge around here. Thanks again! PSB
