I want to add a frag/grow out Tank to my 75 gallon reef. It is a reef ready tank about 65-75 gallons 3'x2'x20" . I will be using my old sump from my 240 (its running right now on the 75). So my question is how will some of my frags and corals do? I'm thinking just like a big water change, but do not want to disturb some of my SPS. any steps to insure a good transition.

How much water in your sump? You wouldn't really be doubling, if you have say 20-30 gallons in your sump. I would set up the frag tank, but not plumb it to the main tank quite yet. Do some nice water changes in your display tank. Put the taken-out water in the new frag tank. Powerhead to keep the water moving - a heater to keep it warm. If it's deep enough, take some spare live rock and put it in there. Wait a few days, and do another water change - add that water, AND about 10 gallons of freshly-mixed salt water. When you get close to the proper level of your frag tank, just plumb it in, and add water to make up the difference.

I just did this very thing about three weeks ago. What I did was make all new water in the frag tank, and then when I turned it on, I just trickle fed the new water in to the total system at the rate of about 10 gallons an hour for about ten hours. My main tank and prop tank actually seemed to like it very much, and the only effect's I have seen at all is new algae in the frag tank.

Thanks for the advise. I do have some live rock that is in the sump and I have waiting to be able to take it out and put on the bottom of the frag tank( bare bottom/rock/then eggcrate. my sump is not that large but should be able to handle it. If not I will have to get another sump made,
