bryaniscool January 6, 2009 January 6, 2009 ive been researching mantis shrimp for the past month and a half (still researching) and i havent really gotten a good answer on this: what would be an ideal glass thickness for a N. wennerae or even better a standered tank that fits the glass thickness requirements. all info is appreciated

A wennerae can't break glass. Even the really big peacocks and chiragras which can have only done it on extremely rare occasions, usually when greatly antagonized. You have more chance of your tank leaking due to manufacturing defects. tim Edited January 6, 2009 by extreme_tooth_decay

extreme_tooth_decay January 6, 2009 January 6, 2009 so a standard 10 gal would be fine? Definitely for a wennerae. A big peacock or chiragra could (but wouldn't) break it, but a wennerae could not.

extreme_tooth_decay January 6, 2009 January 6, 2009 (edited) Here are a couple links with a lot of good information: "Chiragra and peacocks are the only species that are tough enough to crack a tank" LINK1 "Even mantis shrimp that are larger very RARELY will be agitated enough to try breaking the glass. Dr Caldwell notes that he has seen only Odontodactylus, Gonodactylus chiragra, and Hemisquilla do this." LINK2 Edited January 6, 2009 by extreme_tooth_decay

zygote2k January 6, 2009 January 6, 2009 Great links- I love these critters and have had several Peacocks in the past and have a small green one now. It is 100% urban legend that they can break glass. I challenge anyone that can find a link that shows a mantis breaking a fish tank. If you find a link, I'll give you a nice frag.
