Sherwin-Williams Tile Clad Epoxy 'Highly recommended.

How about 100 coats of shellac? Looks pretty, provides the kind of depth that only months of inhaling harmful vapour can. Plus it's durn near indestructable.

 

I don't like Sherwin-Williams' colors/penetration for staining, but it is one of the best finish coats - I recommend stain to desired color first, finish with clear epoxy.

 

And remember, the more coats the better!
