Amuze June 13, 2008 June 13, 2008 (edited) I'm in the process of selling my Cichlid tank and I'm wondering if using some of the lace rock to make live rock out of it is a good or bad idea. Would cleaning/scrubbing and curing the rock be safe to put into an established SW tank or should I just let the rock go? Any good suggestions on methods to clean the rock and cure it? I live in a condo. Lol. Edited June 13, 2008 by audible
blaze98 June 13, 2008 June 13, 2008 I used lace rock as my base in my first tank. I covered it up with sand and placed live rock on top of it, then I read something somewhere about it leaching some kind of chemicals into saltwater so I took it out, but it never did any harm to my tank while it was in there, at least none that I noticed.
Amuze June 13, 2008 Author June 13, 2008 I've decided I'm just going to let it go with the tank when it sells. I have a specific set up I want to do for my larger tank which will require all new LR.
jason the filter freak June 13, 2008 June 13, 2008 What is lace rock? I used texas holey rock from a chiclid tank as LR in my tank and it's worked out great.

reefmontalvo June 16, 2008 June 16, 2008 Well "Lace Rock" and "Base Rock" are almost the same, depending on who you may ask. When first got into the hobby I was buying lots of lace rock since it will in time turn in to live rock. I purchased about 30lbs of rock. I then purchased about 30lb more of live rock. I ran the live rock next to the base rock and in time the coraline growth took place. You must remeber that Live rock is one the most important and probably the most expensive apsect of the tank. But the the rock does many jobs. It give you bio filtration, homes for your fish and places to place your many corals.
