Hi

I have a CPR HOB refuge that has cheato and red grape algae in it. The refuge is fed by the standard rio pump and I have an additional 90 gph poeerhead inside the refuge.

My cheato grows at a modest pace, I have to trim a bit off every month or so. Now, my red grape has also grown so much that it grows out of the water. It then becomes white. It is safe to cut these off with sissors or will cutting it spread it in the tank?

Also, my cheato gets this redish slime algae growing on it. I simply trim if off.

Another question. My cheato floats on the top of the water. Should I anchor it under water?

Thanks!

worry more anout the talk then the HOB

I feed mine via split off from main return pump with a mj1200 just to keep water moving in HOB. without the MJ, I too have a buildup of cyno (red slime algae) in the fuge.

as far as algae growth, be happy that things are growing, just trim it from time to time and/or push the mass down to buy you more time. either way, you will have to trim from time to time. don't worry too much about algae getting in display for the fish may just eat the little pieces that find their way to freedom....the trimmings you can also spread to other members here in the boards. just another way to meet fellow members and share the fruits of your labor.

Sounds like your fuge is working perfectly! You're desirable algae is growing!

As for cyano in the fuge, personally I don't worry about it. It's an algae. It converts nitrates to nitrogen gas which can leave the water. Granted, you don't want it to spread into the display tank though.
