I have a glass 75 gal. tank and would like to drill for a close loop, but I thought glass tanks over 5 gal were tempered and you can not drill tempered glass tanks. Is this true?

it all depends on the tank's manufacturer. some tanks have the bottom tempered, some have the bottoms and the back and some don't have tempered glass at tall.

I know I'm late here but I recently drilled my 75 gallon tank. I asked around about the glass on the tank. Well I figured that the bottom of the tank is tempered and the sides are plate. Also with the bottom being tempered it does not haveto be as thick as the sides. I noticed after drilling the tank with no problems I took the plug left over and measured the thickness I found it to be close to a 1/8 in thick. The biggest problem I found was keeping the darn thing on traget until it has grounded a grove to lock the saw on.

How big was the hole you drilled? When I'm readly, I'll be drilling several 2 3/8" holes.

I have drilled a large number of tanks and have found that most tanks have the bottoms tempered but not the sides. If I am not sure I always go to the companies website. If you dont know who made it I have heard using polarized sunglasses will work as well, but have never tried this. I would also think you could go to a company like Delray glass and they might be able to tell you.

Another point I will make. Whenever I drill a tank I use a wooden drill guide with plumbers putty. I bead the putty around the wood push it to the tank. This allows you to use the guide as a resevior to add water and makes it easy to get the hole started. What I use looks like this
