I'm looking to possibly make my own nano tank. It would be 22" wide x 17" deep and 20" tall using 1/2" acrylic/cell cast. And building a cabinet large enough to accommodate skimmer/pump etc. Any thoughs out there?

Hey, you live out where my aunt is :)

I would recommend having NAGA making the tank for you. Finishing acrylic edges and seaming so it is strong, clear and most importantly water-tight forever is a fine art. I can't imagine that tank would cost much at all.

As far as building the cabinet, go for it. I like building the frame and then purchase cabinet face only components to finish the outside. Plan the size of your sump, lights, and components so you can build the stand large enough to hold it all. 22" wide is a tight spot to fit everything.

Do they have a web site? I tried googing NAGA and came up with some climbing club.

shoot Naga a PM with the dimension that you want and if you want an internal or external overflow etc, and he'll reply to you with a quote. Several members on the club have their tank built by Naga. Yauger and stratos22ss are two off the top of my head that I remember at the moment. Yauger is having a second tank built by him so if you're looking for references or want to see what it looks like, you can shoot yauger a PM and see if you can take a look at his tank.

now thats funny

If you like to make things yourself like I do, there are a lot of do-it-yourself threads on the internet that tell you how. They even tell you the ins & outs as to how to prevent making major mistakes.

Thanks, I'm googling right now....when I should be working....can you say hooked

i personally would try it but probably wouldnt trust it. Think about it, do you really want to risk the lives of fish/corals to save a few bucks? I wouldn't and i would always worry my tank would break when i wasnt home and loose everything on top of ruining my carpet/flooring, electrical and maybe even cause a fire. Naga makes nice tanks and thats the route i would go. Thats just my opinion as i have thought the same thing you have. Know i can say it would be cool to try it out and see how it turns out. If it held water i would use it as a RO water container.

I've thought abou it several times. If you can get someone to sell and cut the maerials and/or you have the right tools & skills go for it. I figured that I didn't have any of the above and would probably end-out having to say "lets try this again" and spending a bunch of money...

I ended-out having Jeff @ Pimped-Out-Aquariums do a custom tank for me. Great piece of work. Just look up NAGA under the members list above. Try a PM & EMail. I gave him my design I did in MS Paint and he gave me a quote and we agreed to go-ahead with it. I'm working on the freekin stand every freekin night now. Wood, screws, & glue is much more forgiving to a weekend warrior with none of the right tools & skills like me.

I think building is half the fun. I'm pretty good with the tools, but phisigs79 does have a point. I've PM NAGA and he's given me a reasonable price for what I'm looking to start.

I think after you saw what was on the do-it-yourself threads you came to the same decision, that I did. I will be having Jeff make me up a frag tank when I get the money together. I've seen his work and it is great. So is his price.

Yea, my wife is always calling me "Tim Allen" because I like to tear into things and make them better. And sometimes it doesn't always works out, then she has the satisfaction of being right, and since this tank will be on the 2nd floor...you know.

My wife had the gull to hang this sign in MY workshop:

HOUSE RULES:

Hey Dad & Kids

Rule #1

MOM IS ALWAYS RIGHT

Rule #2

IF MOM IS WRONG, SEE RULE #1
