These are the fish that I want to get for my agressive 180 (220 with sump). I just wanted to here what to expect or what won't work.

Emperor Angel

Niger Triger

Bursa Trigger

Clown Trigger

Snowflake Eel

Miniatus Grouper

DogFace Puffer

Several Domino or striped Damsels (if they

thats quite a bio load. you may need dan to build a standard 12 for you. nutrients may be an issue.

My take is that it will be fine when they are small, but once they start growing... your wrasses will attack your other fish depending on how aggressive they are, the triggers will eventually begin to fight, the grouper will begin to try and swallow up slower growing fish, and you'll end up wanting to switch back to a reef! That said, the miniatus doesn't get all that big considering groupers in general, and the triggers are somewhat less aggressive that you have chosen.

Agressive Reef if it works.

Is this going to be FO or aggressive reef?

Dave, I'm pretty confused about your post. I understand the part about the fish getting bigger and having problems but I'm not quite sure what you're saying the problem will be. Are you saying that nothing about my list will work once they get bigger or that I should tweak it in a certain way or what?

from everything I've read the clown trigger will one day without warning kill everything else in the tank - that's the reason i didn't get one for my tank.

i think dave was trying to talk you into staying with a reef!

If the wrasses are aggressive enough (be sure to buy them big) they can hold their own. any damsel you get will be eaten by the grouper if not the eel or triggers.

the niger trigger is very passive. i wouldn't mix with a clown. same with a bursa.

Here's a trigger article:

oh, and the skimmer is definitely something to think about. I'm not sure a std 12 is needed, but these are very messy eaters and you will need to keep water quality very high in order for the angel to be happy.

Fish are unpredictable... that's the bottom line of what I was saying. When you get into aggressives, who knows what you will get. The overall temperament of a species is fairly easy to figure out, it's how the individual fish is going to react that is the problem. For example, there was a store in Indiana that had clown triggers that were around 1'. Those triggers would eat the heaters in the tanks and try and bite the fingers off of anyone who put their hands into their tanks. I have also had a lunare wrasse, small guy, about 6-8", which ripped the stomaches out of other fish, including groupers. I also had a grouper that, mysteriously enough, would always end up as the only inhabitant in the tank... it's hard to tell what will happen, but your stock list seems to be asking for trouble, the kind of trouble you probably wouldn't have with a straight up reef.

Oh, I also wouldn't put any of the triggers in a reef. The niger may be OK, but the other ones will most likely not be (they will all probably carry stuff around and rearrange when you don't want them to). Same for the puffer. And the wrasses. The eel would be fine until it started to dig around, so make sure that you have plenty of larger rock and that everything in there is secured down or epoxied. That's the only problem with the eel, that it could cause rock slides and bury corals if they fall down.

Thanks everyone for the feedback. No part of my list is set in stone. The only thing that is set in stone is that I not keeping a reef after what happened to my reef. Talk about unpredictable. I basically put all the fish I'd like to have. Now I'll take some off. The clown trigger is going, and the Damsels as well. The grouper is definite.

What triggers will be the best for keeping multiple that can keep uo with the rest of fish?

The rocks will be very secure. We're going to attach ech one with rods this weekend.

I'll definitely get the grouper, wrasse that I listed and triggers. Damsels are already off, and so is the clown trigger. Now that leaves us with:

Multiple triggers (not sure what type)

Eel

Grouper

Puffer

Wrasse

Angel

Does that look better? The only thing I don't know about is what kind of triggers.

Looks good. Triggers that would be good: picasso, niger, hawaiian black, bursa, pinktail, halfmoon, rectangular, bluechin, crosshatch, sargassum.

Mostly stay away from the Balistes/Balistoides/Balistapus, etc.

My personal favorites are the blue line and the queen, both of which would eat a clown trigger alive with their aggression level... question - why do you want a trigger? If it's because of their behavior and wanting a really aggressive one, go back to getting aggressive ones and limit what else you get. If it's based on how they look, then it's personal preference. Search around, see what you like, then see if it fits into a plan or not.

My LFS back in Va. Beach has a Queen Trigger in the first tank when you walk in. Personal pet of the owner and the only fish in a 180. She's about 24"-28" and really an awesome fish - absolutely huge! Responds to everyone outside the tank and you can get her to do barrel rolls :)

I've always liked the way Triggers looked. Since I was a kid I wanted a Clown Trigger. I'm going to pass on that due to it's behavior but I still want other Triggers.
