So as always I was busy at work reading about aquariums carbon and everything else air traffic related and came upon an article that really made me consider doing a big change to my tank. the article is written by Richard Harker and is about how he aquascaped his tank very minimally with the intention of giving his corals room to grow.

Currently I feel I have some beautifull and large pieces of live rock and am considering removing a good deal of them putting some more horizontal which will give me places to attach corals and give a lot of sand bottom areas. maybe a lagoon look in the middle which can slowly fill in with SPS.

What do you all think of this wonderfull idea. :)

We had heard of this, and actually acted on it in our new 180 (see link below). What we found was that we QUICKLY ran out of available places to put our SPS's. We converted this past weekend, putting in more rocks and turning our big ones from ledges to towers.

FWIW.

I will read your thread more tonight but it looks very interesting. I will also mention a bit of my plan.

I think the short answer is do whatever floats your boat! Everything in a reef aquarium has to look good to one person, the owner, what others think is nice, but doesn't matter if it doesn't fit with the owner's plan. If every single member of WAMAS came out today and told me how ugly my tank was, I wouldn't change it as I like how it looks. Extra space for corals? The name of that game is... upgrading!

I say go for it! I've always been a fan of minimal rock.

Here is a shot of mine. I removed a lot of rock to give the corals more room. I found that a tank looks much better with a nice corals selection that has room to grow instead of a bunch of nice frags.

And the owners wife :)

I do think I will go for it though

I really like the look of your tank gadgets. Do you have more pictures of it?
