treesprite January 30, 2008 January 30, 2008 Why is it that algae - other than macros - grows in the tank and not the fuge? It's like that at home and it's like that at work where the sump/fuge is actually a section of the tank itself with just clear plexiglass separating it from the main tank area. Given the 2 very different setups, it's clearly not lighting nor placement of return, and given that the fuge in the 16g at work is in-tank I am not so sure that it would be due to the water from the fuge having to go through a return.
gastone January 30, 2008 January 30, 2008 Do you have LR in the fuge? Lots of time the LR comes pre-packaged with algae, hence unkown green stuff in our displays. Generally speaking, the algae that we seed the fuge with (chaeto, caulerpa, et al) out competes the other stuff for localized nutrients, this is why the other stuff isn't as visible in the refugium. G.

G. Only a few small pieces are in the fuge at home for my 65 because they didn't fit in with the open rockscaping. The hard green stuff doesn't even grow on the fuge walls, nor coraline, nor hair, turf, or etc., only the macros grow. My fuge lighting is not good but I don't think that has anything to do with it because the tank at work - being an in-tank fuge - has same lights as main tank area. The 16g uses a rubble rock-filled fluval 305 for an intake and return (the apparatus is placed so that intake is on sump/fuge side of divider and return is on main area side of divider). What happens for other people? I kind of had the belief that all manner of algae was a good thing to have in the fuge including micros, hence I am wondering if it's not a good thing that none of it is in the fuge for either tank. Maybe I'm wrong about that.
