discretekarma September 25, 2007 September 25, 2007 What's the best way to run my RO/DI. I'll be getting one at the end of next week and want to get feedback about how I should run it. Is it safe to use an auto top off? Should I have the RO/DI auto top off a seperate tub and then have the seperate tub auto top off the system? My 180 goes through about 5 gallons a day or close to it so I'd like to have auto top off somehow if possible. I'm a DIYer on some things but not so much plumbing. If anyone can help me come up with a plan that would be great. Thanks.
YBeNormal September 25, 2007 September 25, 2007 Some people have their RO/DI hooked up to a float valve in their sump or to the reservoir on their ATO. I recommend against that though as it greatly increases the chance of flooding. Besides, RO/DI units are not as efficient when making very small volumes of water. Use a tub or other reservoir in the middle and turn off the RO/DI once the tub is full.

discretekarma September 25, 2007 Author September 25, 2007 (edited) So you are saying that I should manually fill a tub and then turn off the RO/DI once it's full. My tank evaporates about 5 gallons a day so let's say that I make 40 gallons a week. Would it be safe to make that 40 gallons in to a tub and then auto top off from that tub in to my sump and then manually turn on the RO/DI again for a few hours once the tub gets low? Rascal September 25, 2007 September 25, 2007 Use a tub or other reservoir in the middle and turn off the RO/DI once the tub is full. That is probably the best way. I do it the same but don't turn off my RO/DI except when I will be away from the tank for a while. I empty the tub once or twice a week for water changes though. Very important to get a reliable ATO system for topping off the tank. Don't skimp here.
discretekarma September 25, 2007 Author September 25, 2007 LMK if you have any recommendations on this. Is a float the most reliable ATO method? Should I use a mag type pump or a power head to go from the tub to the sump? I'll be going about 4 feet up in to the ceiling and then about 25 feet through the ceiling and then about 9 feet down to the sump. I'll be getting the filter guys RO/DI and this is what it says it comes with - Auto shut-off (Requires Float Valve or Switch To Work). What should I buy to complete? Part? Brand? etc....I really need to make sure this is done right. Can't afford a mistake on this. That is probably the best way.
