treesprite June 23, 2007 June 23, 2007 i heard this plunk - the clown knocked a snail off the wall, went down and nipped at it. Its not the first time I've seen her knock one off, but I thought when she knocked them off before, it was just a mishap of her trying to attack her reflection with the snail in the way. I've seen her nip at a snail's shell like maybe there was a piece of food on it or something, but this is the first time I've seen a whole scenario of her knocking off the snail and going after it.
jason the filter freak June 23, 2007 June 23, 2007 sounds like a fun game to watch, I had a clown try to host in a long spine black and white urchin for a short while

treesprite June 25, 2007 Author June 25, 2007 just caught it again, and this was one of the really big snails
Sharkb8 June 26, 2007 June 26, 2007 My clown attacks me regularly. Every time I go in to scrape the glass or move something, I get attacked and literally bit by her. I think they are just naturally mean-spirited and territorial.

Have had the same experience, but if some giant hand came in through the window of MY house and started messing around with my stuff, I'd probably bite it too.
treesprite June 26, 2007 Author June 26, 2007 My clowns eat from my hand, so they come looking for food when i put it in the tanks. Even the damsel will come up to my hand, but doesn't actually take any bites, just waits for pieces to fall loose. I caught another snail atttack last night. After they fall she goes down to nip them - maybe she is thinking they are part of that 2 dimensional clown she keeps trying to attack in the glass.
treesprite June 26, 2007 Author June 26, 2007 what type of clowns do u have They are tomato clowns. I recently was told that they are one of the more aggressive clown types. I think having an anemone may help to calm her down, but I'm not yet ready for one.
Black Mammoth June 26, 2007 June 26, 2007 Ever since I added my anenome, my clowns won't leave it. It's pretty cool though. They'll dart out to grab some food, but they won't go very far...a few inches. BTW, I have maroon clowns.
HowardofNOVA June 26, 2007 June 26, 2007 Your Maroons will OWN your tank one day! Tomatoes have a bit of attitude too! I've seen wrasses dart down, grab a snail shell, shake it and down the host in less than a second! VERY QUICK! ...come to think about it, time to order some more snails!!!
treesprite June 26, 2007 Author June 26, 2007 Well, since the shrimp had an avalanche fall on him, there is nothing eating the snails before they have a chance to flip back over. The male clown was digging up the substrate, so I believe the rockwork collapsed rather than being knocked over - at the moment the substrate is gone so he can't do it until I replace it. Clowns are very interesting fish in their behavior. I highly reccomend them, but I really believe now that clowns sharing a tank with other fish need to have a nem to feel secure. Once my tank is shaped up and "nem-proofed", I will get one. The last nem I had, had a damaged foot from the guy in the store using a credit card to get it to let go of the wall to be removed - a couple days after I got it, it couldn't stay attatched to anything, so because it was just sitting there, the shrimp was picking on it, and because the shrimp was picking on it, it wouldn't open for me to feed it and it died. The one before that decided to take a hike over a filter intake. The one before that was torn apart by a decorator crab. Poor nems!
