Macro lens on a budget?

I have been interested in buying a macro lens for photographing my tank. In my search I came across this link, where an ingenious chap built a macro lens out of a Pringles can.

Thoughts? Would this work? I think for the cost it is at least worth giving it a try.

That was very interesting to say the least. Looks like it may work, but I am not really a DIY type of person. If your willing to do it I would love to check it out when your done.
