dzekunoi April 18, 2007 April 18, 2007 I stopped by at Tropical Fish World at Flower Hill shopping center today to get some live food. I was not regular in this store even though I work 2 minutes away but I think it's going to change soon They finished saltwater room! Everything looks great! Tanks nicely setup, clean and easy to view. Noticed some nice corals. Prices are very reasonable on corals now. Anybody was looking for a sweet Tubastrea piece? Fish you can find cheaper in other places and selection a little week but I think they are planning to bring in more and whaetever they have looks good. One fish - 6" fat PBT really is a good find I talked to the owner, Jim, and he assured me he is planning to work more with clubs and run socials, specials etc and invite people to bring aquacultured corals ( for store credit?). He is really a very nice person and I really had good time chatting with him. I left with live brine shrimp, black worms, awesome bubble-gum pink echino and a nice green ricordea with orange mouth AND - the best part - I got 10% off as a club member! They call it aquarium club discount - not a WAMAS discount. Their dry goods selection and prices unfortunately are not there yet. :( Anyway, as I said - nice little store here in Gaithersburg with lots of potentials.
rooroo April 19, 2007 April 19, 2007 (edited) Yeah, their reef room has made a huge improvement. The past few times I've been in there they have little by way of inverts and fish, I think they're not ordering enough to keep up with demand thus far. But all the fish I've purchased from them have thrived, and I never see dead fish in the displays. This is one of my favorite places to stop for fish and frozen food. They're getting there on everything else. Unfortunetly their dry good selection will probably never be there as they have limited space... they do have lots of things in storage though so you just have to ask for some things. altezza April 19, 2007 April 19, 2007 (edited) you are right about their equipment prices, its wayyy too high. I used to come there alot, but ever since they charge me $6.50 for two ounce of live brine shrimp, I stop coming to their store, its just ridiculous Edited April 19, 2007 by altezza
treesprite July 5, 2007 July 5, 2007 TFW is where I get all my fish. Been going there since I very first started out. The 45 gal tank I have, they actually brought to my home no charge because I had no one to help me with it. Jim the owner is a marine biologist, so he knows his stuff. Jason who has worked there for many years, is extremely knowledgable and helpful. Jim sometimes does little "tours" for groups of elementary school kids. I was looking to set up a fish tank for the clients at the mental health program where I work, and Jim gave us a discount on the equipment and donated the fish and plants. They have good sales on livestock a few times a year. You can put yourself on the mailing list if you want to be notified of the sales. They will buy or give store credit if they like something you bring to them. I had this huge mass of java moss that I was thinking I would have to throw away, but Jason told me to bring it in and he gave me credit for it. If you need a part for a piece of equipment, if it's possible to get, they will order it for you. I guess I would call TFW my "home" LFS.
treesprite July 14, 2007 July 14, 2007 (edited) Shoot, I started to say I learned he would give members a discount then realized it was already said. I didn't know about it until yesterday bbecause well, I wasn't reading carefully enough here! I think the last time I bought brine shrimp there is was only a couple dollars, but then I can't really remember when was the last time I got any - I didn't want to put it in the tank while having a nitrate problem because 3 fish can't eat it fast enough. Maybe I only got half a portion or something (they do sell it in half). Edited July 14, 2007 by treesprite
