I have a Glass Cages aquarium with their stock overflow. A fish went from my tank into the overflow and then down into my sump, where I retrieved it.

Is this common? Is there anything I can do to keep this from happening in the future?

Use plastic gutter guard to either make a high fence or to cover your overflow. Howard said in another post that he'd be bringing some to the meeting.

its more common then youd think. a bit of gutter guard over the overflow itself will keep that from happening :P

How do you fasten the gutter guard to the top of the overflow?

Make it a double fence, put some concertina wire on top, and guard dogs in the middle...

Well, that's the design for convict gobies, at least.

I got make my own for my glass cages tank, used plexi-glass Lowes, cut slots about 1/4 in apart and use aquarium sealant. They have been on there for 3 years with no problem.
