Activated Carbon

Please tell me I ain't NUTS....

 

I have been using Black Diamond brand of carbon.... then I ran out.... closest store only had 'Aquatic Garden' brand so I bought it........ I been using it for a month and fighting all kinds of stuff in my tank.... parameters were always good but algae has been unreal and just the water looked ......well dirty.......... so this morning I did a 50% WC... cleaned up the rocks some and the glass front of the tank .... I *swear* the tank looks a thousand times cleaner.... could this be because the the different brand of carbon or am I just

 

I really didn't clean the rocks or glass very good... nothing that I thought would make a HUGE difference..... so can the different brand of carbon be the reason???

Are there different formulas to activated carbon? I could have sworn I saw something along those lines in a catalogue somewhere (this brand is awsome because...and it's price is... oh, by the way, here's Jimmy's brand of activated carbon for cheaper...)

Polyfilter - not a carbon, but plays one on TV! Does the same job, only better.
