I came across an article on eductors and thought it was interesting read.  Does anyone have one on their tanks and, if so, have you really seen a significant increase in flow?

Any idea who sells them?

Thanks.

You can get them from aquatic ecosystems.  I'm sure there are other suppliers.

If you have a big tank, these are a cheap mod to an existing return line.  Sanjay uses them on the penn state tank, and says they really boosted the water flow.  You need a decent sized pump for them though.

OK, I did the google, and I still do not understand eductors use in the aquarium nor how they boost water flow.  They would seem to boost velocity, but not actual flow (GPM).

Any on-line articles on use in aquaria?

Mike- it's just the opposite.  As water from the pump goes through the eductor, it pulls in surrounding water with it, thereby increasing the net movement of water.  The ones for aquarium use are just a specialized output fitting to put on the end of a return line.

Anyone using them and how do they feel about them- could one be placed on a Maxi Jet 1200- I have also tried to read about them and on RC as well- but am not getting a clear picture as to their use- advantages in peoples systems- ect. I am much more comfortable with our smaller local group in WAMAS experience, than the exagerated views you often time see or read n RC, from questionable sources that may have vested interests. Any one try the mods to the MJ 1200 to boost flow such as cutting the output cover back to the larger diameter section? Yes I know two questions but same subject FLOW.

Regards

I have used them in the past and they do work but.... He was right you need a good sized pump to really see a differance. I dont think it would hard to make them.

The principal that causes an eductor to work is pretty simple. The fast moving water is lower in pressure than the surrounding water causing the surrounding water to get pulled along with the faster moving water. This is occuring around the entire eductor so the total volume is increased many times.

I will see if I can find a DIY link to make one.

I found a couple of DIY links and of course left them at home so I can't post them now.  I plan on building several and test them in my system so I will let everyone know my experiences.

I have a 360 with 8 returns being powered by 2 MAG 24 therefore I don't have a whole lot of flow.  I have not needed a lot because I don't have any SPS.  Well, I would like to start so I am planning on quite a few changes.  Eductors are the first.  I will take pictures and log everything and may even share it with everyone if I don't revert to being the laziest man in the world.

Eddi did you get an inductor made for your tank- I am interested in seeing the unit and what its effects are.

Lee,

Yes, I made a very rough DIY one and tried it but with no effect.  I don't think I currently have enough flow to really see a banefit so I am making some changes that will hopefully help.

Once I am done I will let you know whether it was worth it or not.
