I am a computer person and I have a tower that takes LED light strips so it wil glow in the dark:) I never used them soooooo....... I had the brainac Idea to hook them up on my tank for 'moon lights' ....I read on another SW forum that this was achieved at some point so I figured I would try it .... I had to go to the EXPO center last weekend to get several computers for 'the business' so I bought a little 200W ATX Power Supply... once I had it all connected at the tank I found out the PS won't work without a Motherboard hooked up to it....DUH!!..... hhmmm.... googled abit and found this site...... http://www.gideontech.com/content/articles/196/1 I now have 2 looonnnngggg blue light strips on my tank and can't wait till tonight for the 'moon to come out' ......

still works .... for me :)

Cool! I have several old computers laying around with perfectly good power supplies. Now I just have to find some packages of LED's that run at the right voltage.

The article obviously wasn't written by an electronics engineer :)

"SPDT - Single Pull Double Throw"

The switch shown is actually a SPST - Single POLE, Single Throw.

But he's right about some older power supplies not having an on/off switch - I just looked at two of mine, and neither has a switch. If the power supply you want to use has a switch, you can just jumper those two pins on the plug, and use the switch on the power supply, instead of wiring in a switch. Sounds like a little single-pole push-button switch would work just fine instead of the SPST - and I'll bet you could find one of those on an old computer, too :)

Good find!

Did you just take the LEDs out of the case or did you use an add-on LED module?

There is another way of making moonlights (for the non-computer person) it seems to be much simpler than all the talk about motherboards, cpu cases, and all that. I have a link that you can use to take LED's, wire, and a 12volt power supply and make beautiful moonlights! http://www.r6messagenet.com/forums/showthread.php?t=83613

I can go in to much more detail on how to make these if anyone wants me to. I have made several sets of buddy's of mine. You can retro them of put them in you existing reflector if you want to.
